Hi All,

I'm trying to learn how to configure cisco routers.... (tough job)

but ive come across a problem in the first step...

I have the CISCO 3600 Series router with a password but have completely forgotten the password.... i'm following the password recovery procedure...

As part of the password recovery process, the router must be in ROM mode. I'm trying to get it in ROM mode but i get the following error:

Access address high = 0x5, low = 0xd7c03fa0
PC = 0xbfc0a044, Cause = 0x4000, Status Reg = 0x3041f003
Failure detected during ROMMON start-up tests. Restart ROMMON

how do i restart ROMMON?

It looks to me like the IOS is corrupt somehow.

What version is installed on the router right now?

Can I ask why you are trying to learn on a 3600 series? Are you studying for a CCNA?

I'm working through a cisco beginners book, and i have a spare a cisco 3600 series router at home which seemed ideal for me to use.... (not studying CCNA)

I'm not too sure about the version.. wil find out.

Isn't there a way physically TO RESET this router?

Yeah, there is - I dont know the specifics for a 3600, but you will need a roll over cable. Is the book you are working through a CCNA part one book? If it is, resetting the router with a rollover cable is part of the syllabus. Do you have a roll over cable at all? Should be a flat blue one with a serial connector at one and an RJ45 connector at the other (well for a 2500 it is).

When I did my CCNA, we used 2500 series routers, which are very easy to work with.

@RABP, you are quite right, Cisco do own Linksys. But prior to that they manufactured routers themselves for business. The routers are powered by the Cisco IOS, and when you get stuck like this it isnt possible to just hit the reset button on the back. There are specific procedures you need to follow.

No its not the CCNA part one book.. A CISCO Beginners Guide Book... something i purchased from AMAZON... I do have the flat blue roll over cable... what do i do?

by the way karym6, youve done the MCSE course and cisco ones, what do you do? how far have you got with the cisco stuff?

I did a CCNA as part of my masters in networking and advance web technology. It got me absolutely no where. Because I couldnt get a job in networking withing the first 12 months of graduation I was never able to keep up with the technology and now I have pretty much forgotten it all. I did the MCSE when I got my first job with the idea of using it to go further.

Now I work in software development of all things, no need for a CCNA or MCSE, but both certs gave me the ability to move forward strangely.

Anyway, if you have the rollover cable you need to hook it up to the router. There should be a port on the back marked console. Attach the other end to your serial port on the back of your PC. You should be able to connect to the console now - but I dont remember how to do this on a 2500, and never knew on a 3600. Your book should give you an indication on how to connect as the console?

From memory alone, this sounds like you have a corrupt IOS installed right now. You may want to take a look at installing a new version.

thanks for this,

i do know how to connect to router... but can i install a new version of the IOS when the router requires a password?

With the roll over cable you should be able to get into the console mode - this is like the super user mode. From here, you should be able to start recovery and reinstall the IOS for this router.

But its been years since I have done this, so I am not sure I will be much more help - that and I only worked with 2500 series routers.

I take it you can console onto the router into priv mode? If so I`d try re flashing the IOS. Do you have a copy of the IOS. If so just connect the router to your PC`s network card and use a TFTP server like 3com. On the router type copy tftp flash and follow the prompts.

I work in Networking and two be honest mate I`d give it a miss as everyone and their granny now has a CCNA, CCNP etc . It`s getting harder to break into and not that greatly paid.

Only in the past couple of days have just about every Telco announed job losses - BT, THUS (taken over by Cable and Wireless) and Nortel to name a few. If I was you I`d try database development / programming as the money is far greater, more opportunitys and you probably don`t have to know as much.

If you consider still going down the networking route be prepared for the "how many years commercial experience do you have" question as you`ll find nobody will touch you with a barge pole when you say "none".

I rember doing this with the 2600 router i leanred on when doing my ccna (havent passed it yet ) it was quite easy following the book, But i wouldnt know where to start on the 3600

Cant rember mate it was a while back, But we updated the IOS on them so i imagine it would have been the lasest one (about a year ago now though)

Should I scrap CCNA as i'm doing it as part of my CPD

No, if you are doing one now see it through to the end. It didnt help me get a job but it may very well help you get one. When I was doing mine, pretty much everyone else was doing one too, so there was a glut in the market of CCNA certified jobseekers all at the same time.

And, it doesnt hurt to have too many certificates under your belt these days.
