BBC NEWS | Business | £500 for newborns

Thats a totally different thing mate, a extra is you like.

IIRC its something to do with surestart.... will have a google around mate, its done through dwp (dss).

thanks all!

its all not very well advertised is it? lol

thanks for all your replys.

It really all depends on how much you earn between you, the best thing to do is apply even if you feel you might not qualify, you have nothing to loose.

Apply for Working Tax credits and Child tax credits, then once you get a reply apply for the Surestart grant, the amount you recieve depends on your total household income.

Sure Start - maternity grant

single mums on income support get 500 pound just before baby is born thats probably the 500 pound your friend is on about and also if your on income support the goverment gives the baby 250 to put in a child trust fund and they cant get it untill theey are 18 and when its a year old another 250 into the trust fund

tell them your foriegn, you'll get a new house, plasma tv, 50 grand a year and a new car.

To claim the £500 you need to be living in a sure start area in england.. as im not i cannot tell you any more about it..

everybody with a child is entitled to child tax credits and child benefits to claim family tax credit depends on the household income all new parents get £250 baby bond if you are on benefits you get £500 and can get a maternity grant also £500 i think

im in the same boat as you we both work fulltime the wife is on maternity pay and we get child tax credits and child benefit but earn to much to claim working tax credit but be quick in claim child tax as they only back date 3 months

and congrats on the baby girl

Congratulations on your new baby...

Forgive my ignorance, but why should you be entitled to anything?

Thanks for the congratulations firstly.

as for your second question why shouldnt i be entitled to anything?
i have worked all my life paid my tax's and insurance's etc so has my girl?
just because im not in receipt of benefits should not exclude me from financial support should it?
i am in agreement that just because ive had a child i shouldnt get extra money etc.... but as there is help out there child tax credit etc then why shouldnt i apply for this when this can go towards child care costs?
