Mountain Bike

Its normally worth buying a mountain biking magazine and look up the offers on previous years models. You will normally find a few decent £450 - £500 machines for around the £300 mark.
Spending less that this you wont normally get anything decent.

Have a look in the sale section of evanscycles.com they sometimes have some good bargains, but often only limited stock or unusual frame sizes.

EDIT: Also, avoid rear suspension in that price range they will be awful

the carrera range in halfords is not a bad bike, decent frame with decent components

i got carerra cracken 2006 se for around 320 quid a few years back and my m8s reckon it handles like a 1k bike

even mbuk rated it highly

Buy a copy of MBUK and MBR and you'll be sorted for most of the advice that you need.

edcase is right, buy a hardtail and not a full suspension bike for that kind of money.

I bought a specialized sport 08 hard tail from harry hall's cycles in Manchester.

Specialized have knocked of £50 off a lot of the 08 range.

So I got a £300 for £250 and am loving it.

Works fine on all local terrain and have used it Llandegla, the Clwydian mountain range, and Grizdale forest last weekend.

:EDIT: This one

:EDIT: Are you in or near Edinburgh and here

I am a big fan of the specialized bikes, Ive got an old stupjumper kitted with a set of maguras and some sun mammoth rims on it. Leave big chainrings off and its great for trials, put them on and its great for trails. I have snapped a set of forks and 3 sets of handlebars, also bent a few pedal axles on it, but the frame is still rock solid! (The frame is from about 1996/1997!)

Have a look at GT's m8

I used to have a GT Backwwoods and was the best bike ive ever had

Paid £650 for it but that was about 6 years ago

Been on bikes that cost 3 times that and dont come close to the GT

There is a world of difference between the cheap GTs and the expensive ones. I used to have a GT zaskar. That was a cracking ride!

Some of the cheaper ones are rubbish (they just look similar to the good ones lol). Price is normally a good indicator with bikes.. If you can find a £450 upwards bike for £300 then you're generally onto a winner

True mate, you get what yer pay for!

But you always get a good strong frame with GTs and you can always upgrade the shocks and gears over time

I'm also a big GT fan and have the GT Expert

Anyone thinking of getting a mountain bike, have a look at the ride to work scheme.
You can have upto £1000 to spend on a bike but only have to pay half.
so £1000 bike you'd pay just under £500 over 12months the goverment pay the rest.

Payments come out of your wages each month.
Info on the scheme
Department for Transport - Cycle to Work Scheme implementation guidance

I got my employer to set it up via evans cycles.

Congrats on your new bike.

Now get out there and ride whilst it's still warm.

Many happy trails on your new 2-wheeled steed m8.

I hope you've polished your helmet before you take it out :)

I'm getting withdrawal symptoms as I haven't been out on mine since the weather took a turn for the worse.
It'll probably be March before I even think about dusting it off.

Here's one of the pic's I took of it during the summer:
