Any glazers out there to help me with my problem?

I moved house last year and fairly soon on I noticed the windows let in quite a bit of noise. They seem to let in deep tones like car doors closing and it's getting really annoying. The windows are Staybrite and looking at them they are fairly well made ( stainless steel hinges, reinforced locking mechanisms etc ) and seal very well. My old house had cheap double glazing nowhere near as good quality but blocked out far more noise.
I was unsure why there was so much difference but looking at it today I'm fairly certain my old units has a 20mm gap and these Staybrites have only 15mm gaps. I've changed sealed units in the past but is it posible to replace 15mm units with 20mm? The bead that holds them in is huge, approximately 1 3/4" wide so hopefully there will be room to accomodate. Any one have any advice and does anyone think the PVC may be letting the sound in?

so are they pvc windows you have got if so you wont be able to put in wider glazing due to the pvc beads clip in to a groove which would be for your exsiting glazing width of 15mm if they were timber you wouldn`t have a problem

you need to know who made the actual 'profile' that the frames are made from, this is the plastic frame itself, then ring round some companies and find one who uses it, itd be a good idea to start with staybrite, tell them you have 16mm units at the moment and would like 24mm ones instead, theyll then make new units with 6-12-6 glass and spacer bar (insteat of the 4-8-4 you have now) and can also supple new beading to hold it all together. you may find that buying the units elsewhere will be cheaper and just getting the beading from staybrite

not just spark and sat/aerial fitter, also fully qualified uPVC fabricator and fitter :proud:

The air gap wont really make any difference, if you want better sound reduction you need thicker glass. 6mm/space/6mm, 10mm/space/6mm the thicker the glass, the better! You can have them made to the same space you have now

Thanks for the replies. There is a factory nearby that make replacement sealed units that I've used in the past. I'll see if they can sort out a new bead and thicker glass.
Just out of curiosity, there is a decorative lead bead in the outer panel of the current units. Would this have any effect on noise levels?
