Hi peeps,

I'm thinking of starting up a business but I need a wee bit of help in how to register a company name, or find out if a name is not already in use. I know some of you guys have got your own business so i thought I should ask here for some valuable advice. As I am starting up is it possible to register the name under my home address. And any other advice would be useful.

Thanks guys!

If you want to be "trading as" {business name} I'm not too sure if it has to be unique as long as it doesn't break any copyrights or trademarks, might be wrong though.

If you want to start a limited company it is easier to go through a formations company. You will also need a company secretary if you want to go limited but some of the formations companies provide a feature where you pay them to be your secretary and registered office.

There is less red-tape with the first choice but being limited liability has benefits depending on who you deal with etc.

Only go limited if you *really* need to.

As for your name, you could be Disney trading as Fred blogs, if you're not limited.

Oh and limited doesn't mean limited liability anymore, since everything has to be guaranteed by the directors.

yeah i would suggest against limted for now (but pay something like 30 quid year and buy the name you want so no one registers it)

you should go for sole trader and trade as (your name) as BUSINESS NAME

this is the best solution and you wont need to be vat registered unless you earn more than 64000 in a 12 month period.

The best thing i ever did was get a good accountant he costs me a good few houndred a year but i know he earns me much more on vat returns and just dealing with all aspects of my business i give him my books and he does the rest :)

worry free - get an accountat :), did i mention he setup my business aswell :)

Thanks for your advice guys very useful info:
Where can I buy the name, could an accountant do this for me? or could I do this myself online ,I want to register the name before someone else snaps it up. I had a look on companies house website but they don't register companies names on there.

Thanks for your help guys.

Check that the web domains are not occupied as well if you want a website.

That was the first thing I checked, and bought the domain. Just hope the name isn't taken up, but very un likely as I searched for the name on the net and and yellow pages. Cheers spectre.
