i bought a honda civic on friday and every thing seemed to be ok, but now the engine management light comes on after the car has been started for a couple of minutes. the car drives ok but im kind of gutted cause i dont know whats wrong with it. its a 96 Honda Civic 1.6i SR with 82K miles . anyone know if there are any common faults that could cause the engine mangement light to come on? i think it may need a service, would this sort it out? cant really take it to a mechanic cause its got no tax, and i wont be getting my cover note for another week so no tax for a week.:CRYBABY:

grab 1 of those diagnostics kit from ebay for about £60 - £70 and it will read the fault code and then u can post it here or look in autodata and u will know what the problem is.

anyone know where the diagnostic link is in the car. been looking for ages and cant find anything.

Hi mate try this :

Locate the diagnostic plug, it's found under the dash, and behind the glove box.
The plug will look like this:

Take a paperclip and stick one end of the wire into the first socket on the plug and the other side into the other socket. Turn your key to the standby position (don't start the car).
Watch your check engine light in your dash. It should flash. 1 long flash is 10, a quick flash is 1.

So if the CEL light flashes *.....*****, that will equal code 15.

If it flashes *.....*.....**, that will mean code 22.

And here's a list of what the codes mean:
1 O2A - Oxygen sensor #1
2 O2B - Oxygen sensor #2
3 MAP - manifold absolute pressure sensor
4 CKP - crank position sensor
5 MAP - manifold absolute pressure sensor
6 ECT - water temperature sensor
7 TPS - throttle position sensor
8 TDC - top dead centre sensor
9 CYP - cylinder sensor
10 IAT - intake air temperature sensor
12 EGR - exhaust gas recirculation lift valve
13 BARO - atmospheric pressure sensor
14 IAC (EACV) - idle air control valve
15 Ignition output signal
16 Fuel injectors
17 VSS - speed sensor
19 Automatic transmission lockup control valve
20 Electrical load detector
21 VTEC spool solenoid valve
22 VTEC pressure valve
23 Knock sensor
30 Automatic transmission A signal
31 Automatic transmission B signal
36 traction control found on JDM ecu's
41 Primary oxygen sensor heater
43 Fuel supply system
45 Fuel system too rich or lean
48 LAF - lean air fuel sensor
54 CKF - crank fluctuation sensor
58 TDC sensor #2
61 Primary oxygen sensor
63 Secondary oxygen sensor
65 Secondary oxygen sensor heater
71 random misfire cylinder 1
72 random misfire cylinder 2
73 random misfire cylinder 3
74 random misfire cylinder 4
80 Exhaust Gas Recirculation insufficient flow detected
86 ECT Sensor (Engine Coolant Temperature) circuit range / performance problem
90 Evaporative Emission Control System leak detected in the fuel tank area
91 Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor low input
92 Evaporative Emission Control System insufficient purge flow

Hope that helps you guys.

Have a look on civicsportsclub mate they will help you out!

I take no responcablity for making the guid i just found it

just had a look and ive got a 5 pin and a 2 pin so now what?

pic attached

l would bridge the two pin one . leave the five . do as info and count the codes .

was holding my breath and went for it, it showed 4 long flashes and 1 short flash, it did this over and over. so thats fault code 41, Primary oxygen sensor heater. what is this and am i alright to drive the car as usual or will i have to get it sorted. thanks for everyones help.

the single wire lambna sensor m8 in the exhaust under the bonnet cheap as chips and very easy to install . one spanner
