hi, just wondering if anyone could give me a bit more info on how to convert an nthell box to tw. i know it's possible with some boxes, i've searched and found a couple of posts saying that its possible, but there weren't too many details on how to actually do it. is there a tut for this? i know that some boxes are easier than others, and i know i'll need to get a docsis box. but i'm a bit stuck.
any help would be much appriciated
thanks guys

Not sure about this mate as ive never had to do it but i think i read somewhere on here that you need to re set your net id on your box. i'm sure theres more to it than that but someone will probably put you right soon enough.

Sorry i coildnt be more help mate.

i was assuming i'd need to do that anyway. but i'd got the impression that some boxes will swich over easily whereas some need the amtels reprogramming or something.

A 1000 Phase1b will move across with no problem at all, just set the netid and put a telewest image on the card and it will load up the telewest firmware when put on stream - effectively it 'becomes' a 1010. This is the only one which doesn't require chip reprogramming (although I believe some people say the 4000N will also do this but only ones with a particular version of the board).

Just to add to this post - I am in a telewest area and have had quite a few ditv1000-phase-1b boxes that converted over to telewest with no problems, however all of these boxes were on either CR1, CR2 or CR3 NTL software -> which then updated to CR3/CR4 telewest software.
I have been reading quite a few posts on a couple of forums from people who have had 1000phase1b boxes on NTL CR3.2 which simply would not update on telewest (nor would they downgrade in an exC+W area).

I've never had one on CR3.2 to try... so it would be interesting to hear from any members here who have either succesfully managed to go from NTL-CR3.2 to TW-CR4, as this would confirm that this doesnt affect all 1000phase1b's.

great news.
thanks very much for your replies.
i'll be looking out for a phase 1b cos theres fook all tw boxes on fleabay. is there an easy way i can tell in advance what firmware it's running? (eg. when it was removed from the stream/last used?) or will it just be a case of getting the seller to check the eng menu?
and, yeah, it would be interesting to hear from anyone who's managed to get a 3.2 to work.
thanks again

I've personally had two 1000 Phase1b running C&W CR3.2 which have gone over to TW no problem.

Cheers for the reply bammy - thats quite interesting, I wonder if anyone knows of any hardware modification that has been done to certain P1b's (maybe ones that went for a refurb?) - It does seem odd that some will switch whilst others wont.

Yes, there are differences

The values of the filter components around the tuner/demodulator changes due to different signal levels being present on the networks (in NTL's case - a different system as well). This alone can make it more difficult for a C&W box to lock onto a signal in a TW area. In most cases the actual components that change are fairly small value capacitors which are not value marked !

Also, the components that define a box's hardware identity are likely to be different. This can significantly affect a boxes ability to accept a firmware update.

Advice is to always try and aquire the correct box for your network. In the long run these boxes are likely to give you far less trouble.

so am i right in thinking that a box with the no update mod would be pretty useless to me? i don't know too much about this mod, but i've read some posts saying that the amtels need to be removed from the simm. so would this mean i'd need a new simm if i got on that had been modded in this way?
thanks

atmel removal from the SIMM is for 1000 only, NOT 1000 Phase 1b which has a different SIMM.

thats a relief. so a no update mod on a 1000 1b will be easy to remove?
