Hi,
Got home tonight...VM van in street...thought nothing of it.
As luck would have it I had to nip out.....on my return the VM van pulled up outside my house, spoke with the guy and he said that they had traced a fault to my address !!! and could he check the box on the outside..ok I said then promptly went in and switched off my Dreambox. He asked me if I'd turned anything off as the fault had gone.....no I said but the lad is changing the ram in his pc and is offline at the moment...that shouldn't make any difference he said, so anyway he's removed the splitter from the box...so no HD tv:Angryfire still got a sky sub though :Doc:.
I can replace the splitter but what do you guy's think....I have their top broadband speed, should I also get their lowest TV package.....or are they really on to us ?????

replace splitter .. and make sure your connections are tight on all ends . loose connections can make noise on the line , that might be wot they had

Yeah, he did mention that a loose connection might cause it, so when I get another splitter I'll check them all.....but saying that I've not touched any for 6 months or so.............. Thanks for your input:THANKS:

we all doomed pmsl

bring on black screens for all

get hobby back

Well I reckon I'll invest in a F plug compression tool and some fittings and see how I go....thanks to all for your replies.

could you not just split from the inside then they wouldnt be able to disconnect anything would they aslong as you have a broadband connection, as it would only be one wire in but then split inside the home, thats how mine is anyway.

I was a bit unsure as to why it was split from the outside as well?

They split from the Outside connection only when you have other Boxes or your Router in other parts of the house

i was just wondering , how many times can you split the virmin cable feed coming into the house ?, now mine was done years ago by telewest and is still working today, anyway it is already split into two as you can see from pic..the cable coming in from outside the street is on the right..goes into what i presume is a splitter...which then exits into two line....the centre on goes straight up to my bedroom where the cable modem or superhub is....the one on the right comes out....and ive split this into 2 again via a splitter..one line the new white cable goes into my cable tuner on my reciever,,,,and the other black cable coming out of the splitter is spare at the moment...hoping to connect to another cable reciever in my bedroom.....what you guys think? ...my signal or SNR is at 69% most of the time...

Had virmin cut my services, when the engineer visited, he said that there was a lot of noise coming from my address and a previous engineer had disconnected me as it can affect everyone and they don't know who's plug is who's in the green cabinets. He asked if I had split my feed, of course I said no ;) the engineer just put a noise filter on my cable and buggered off leaving me to re-split the feed.

they can trace RF leakage from loose connections, but cant trace to exact house its to within about 50 metres, then they check which houses have a cable package to try and determin where it is.......only know cos my cuz is an auditor for Virmin

you can split loads without affecting q and s ....but you will lose 3 decibles of sound with every split

More information on the Tratec FDU61 here from many moons ago LOL: https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/general-cable-discussion-354/141052-tratec-fdu-61-4-a.html

You could also try the 'Yellow Brick' amp normally found on the 'Bay' but if your suing a splitter especially an official one your losing around 3.5 -4db per output this is only signal level and should not affect signal quality.

But as with anything you need to have decent Signal/Quality in the first place before you add a splitter

Update - Ok then, when I first went the cable route I had problems with SNR etc. so fitted the "yellow brick" a few tweaks and all was good (I have twin cable tuners on my box). I have now fitted a new splitter next to my modem (inside), the cable then goes around the outside (25m) back through the wall and into another splitter and into my box. Hope your all still with me...........
SNR etc is all good and the "yellow brick" is out of the loop (not used), the only difference is that I have used F plug compression fittings rather than screw type....fingers crossed:proud: Got a spare yellow brick now:rolleyes:

Forgot to add....using Webro 100 Hd cable....... if that helps ? Suppose quality counts.....

Could also have been you had enough SNR in the first place and the level was swamping the tuners now you have added another splitter and cable run the signal has been attenuated again which would make it drop and probably stabilise itself, Unless of course Virmin's been round at the CAB tinkering and altered your power levels.

Just had a similar problem myself though i had Crap tuners in a receiver went exploring and fitted a 12db attenuator to the end and now my badly pixelated picture has sorted itself and my SNR has shot up by another 30%.

Moral of the story before you buy a yellow brick try and attenuate the signal first before anything cause you never know

Those T&Cs are pointless. Just because you use their equipment doesn't mean that they can enter your home as and when they feel like it without your permission as that amounts to unlawful entry which is illegal. They could say if you chose to leave at the end of your contract we will shoot you, that doesn't make it legal just because it's in their T&Cs :p
