Is there anything else that I will need apart from a null modem cable to flash my dreambox 500c? I am waiting for the 2 day 20 post rule before I can read the guides. I'm new to all this and would like to use the most straight forward method. Any advice on what I need to get or information I could read to give me a head start would be appreciated. Thanks.

null modem should be any dreambox owners best friend as this is the tool to get things back on track after a bad flash but tis not the fastest way to flash

what id recomend is also a crossover cable as this will allow u to flash with flashwizzard pro or via the telnet method and is alot quicker :) although u do need to know the ip address of the dreambox (which u can set via the onscreen menus)

most of all have fun with ya dreambox tis all fun :) :)

theres loads of stickys in the dreambox section excelant reading m8

Is a crossover cable the same as an Ethernet cable or different? I am totally new to this and unfamiliar with everything. In my ignorance (before I found this site) I connected my Ethernet cable directly to my cable modem and clicked on software update in the Dreambox Expert Setup menu. I was hoping that would get my box up and going with the necessary software to tune in the channels, but as I found out it wasn't as simple as that and I took to the Internet and found this forum (Which is the answer to my prayers). I would like to know what I need and what software to get etc. but am clueless at the moment. I can't wait to start reading the guides I've been recommended as soon as my account privileges allow.

Cross over cable is like an ethernet cable, except the the wires inside are 'crossed-over'. Maplin should sell it.

In the meanwhile use the nullmodem cable and a software called DREAMUP http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/dm600/

I'm not sure if this will flash to the DM500C however.

Download an image compatible with DM500C. Follow the flashing instructions the link above and you're away to go.

So an Ethernet cable wont work as it is different? I'll take a look next time I'm in Maplins, but I'll be ok to flash the box with a Null Modem Cable until I get a cross over cable.

Does anyone know if DREAM UP will flash to a 500c? Or is there something else I should use that will work with a Null Modem Cable.

Thanks again everyone for helping.

I've now downloaded the Dreamup software from the link above. I will get my Null Modem Cable delivered tomorrow hopfully. By then I should have 20 posts and be able to read the guides. Am I right in thinking I need to 1st read up on how to flash, but do I also need to download an img file and are there lots of img's. If so what one do I need to get Bruteforce so that I can tune in my channels? Again please forgive my ignorance as I haven't a clue, but am trying my best to understand. I hope the guides are idiot proof, if not I'll be calling on everyones help. Thanks to everyone again for their help and patience.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and have a 500C which came with an image. Therefore, I am also looking for all the information that I can get, so as to re-flas the box as it seems to have hung up. I would like a reply also, about bruteforce. Is this included in the image?

Thanks

Gaz

The bruteforce scanning option is usually included in any image that's been modified for UK cable.

The easiest way to flash the dreambox is to use Dreamup and a null modem cable...as detailed above. Check out the Dreambox link in my signature.

Nul Modem Cable

I found eBay the cheapest place to get a Null Modem cable.

CLICK ON THIS FOR AN EG.

I can't wait for mine to come so that I can get stuck into the guides and learn how to flash my box.

I'm not sure the cheapest place to get a Cross Over Cable though. I've had a look on eBay and their a bit more expensive than the Null Modem Cable's.

This forum has been a great help to me, and it's made what I thought might be an imposible task to me seem less frightning.

Thanks to all who've helped.

If you have a small spare ethernet cable lying around, you can always cut it and cross the pairs yourself. Its very easy and not a hassle at all

As junaydmirza says you can modify the cable yourself. Do a google on "RJ45 Pinouts" to find diagrams.

Crossover cable....

A crossover cable is to a regular ethernet patch cable what a null-modem cable is to a regular serial cable. Both have a couple of the wires reversed in the cable so no other hardware is needed.

Null modem is great for flashing an image if the box crashes (and if like me you have a soldering iron handy can be knocked up in a few minutes) however compared to ethernet is slow.

Depending on your internet connection you might have an ethernet router in the house already... then you can connect the PC to the router and the Dreambox to the router using regular ethernet patch cables and bobs your uncle! Also given that for some reason crossover cables are way overpriced it might even be cheaper to get a cheap 5 port ethernet hub/switch and patch cables than a bit of wire.

Just a thought.

Using Dream Up Would be The best option as you can connect thru both
