Apart from messing about with my satellite receiver, one of my other hobbies involves growing plants outside in the UK which most people would consider impossible.

For example. in my garden I grow unprotected palms such as Trachycarpus wagnerianus and Chamaerops humils Cerifera. The 'waggie' as the first is often referred to, is now about 12 feet in height and is absolutely breathtaking. I also have real rarities such as Trachycarpus princeps which is an absolute stunner.

A grow two species of banana outside, these being Musa basjoo and Musa sikkimensis Red Tiger. This summer, due largely to the nice weather, these have got to roughly 10 feet in height and when visitors see these, they just cannot beleive it's possible.

I could go on and on but I realise that many people would be bored stiff but I just wondered if anyone else on here shares this interest of mine.

I'm now going to attempt to post a couple of pics. I've never posted one on this site before so it's fingers crossed that it'll work.

Just in the case you don't know which is which, the banana plants are the ones with the broad leaves.

Hi great! me too had a Trachycarpus( fortunei i think ) i planted it in my garden and it was doing great for about 3 years. It even grow weird flowers the last year. Sadly we had a crazy winter here in the Netherlands one day at night -15c and during daytime + 12c. that killed the palm too much difference in such a short period is killing.
Maybe this summer ( when my other plant grows some money :proud:) i will try again.

greetings,

Jan
