hi peeps,

i am a total novice to gardening and need your valuable help

bought a house lasy July which has a nice long garden, have not moved in yet as i have plans to do some major building work, have been waiting for my planning permission to be confirmed by the local counicil

anyway since I have had the keys i did not mow the lawn until 2 weeks ago,
most of the lawn is looking off colour with only a very few patches of green

just wanted to know what is the best and easiest method to getting a nice green lawn

i have watched many youtube videos but would like to know how fellow members go about when it comes to trying to get a nice green lawn

any help will be much appreciated :)

I think its a combination of things. But if your doing an extension, i would just keep it trimmed at the moment as it won't stay good while you have stuff stacked on it and all the other things that will wreck it.

Get the house sorted then concentrate on the garden would be my advice.

did not think of that

sound advice m8

When your ready to do the lawn buy fertlizer with high nitrogen content in it your lawn will be lush within a month, But the down side of it is you will have to mow it more often becouse it will just grow.

These are the questions i like lol

have a wee read of the sticky about fertilizers to give you a wee run through of how things work mate

i cant really comment on the DIY store stuff but as long as it have a good nitrogen content it will be good, but if you cant get water on the grass straight after youve applied the fertilizer wait until its due to rain as the fertilizer needs to be "washed" in

a fertilizer with something like 10-5-10 would be good to start with, that is the NPK, Nitrogen Phosphate Potassiam which are the 3 main nutrients grass needs to grow

after a few weeks once your grass is nice and green and youve cut it a few times you could try that aftercut product thats being advertised which stops grass growing upwards but instead makes it grow outwards, also known as tillering. it also feeds the grass AFAIK so you get a nice green lawn and it stops the mower being out as much

Will adding fertilizer also fill in patches or will that need re-seeding or something ?

I would loosen the soil in the patche's very lightly & reseed dont put fertilizer on the new seed untill it's got established.

You can buy preseeder fertilizer which you can spread the day before you seed

to be honest for patches i would fertilize the whole area just to put some nutrients in the ground then water it in

after a week then do as the above poster says, once the seed is in then rake the soil over the seed to protect it from birds and the weather but make sure the seed gets plenty of water
