Howdy folks,

Getting Sly fitted this weekend and having Multi Room put into a room upstairs.
Whilst the guy is drilling holes I want to ask if he would not mind adding a splitter to the TV Ariel coming down the wall.
Not sure if he will or not, but the rest of the job will be easy for him as I already have a dish.

So the question is, what is a decent external splitter to buy?

Also am I right in thinking that coaxial cable for Sat/TV is or can be the same?

Sat co-ax is good for terr. ant, but the old 'low-loss' co-ax not good for sat. Re. 'good' outdoor splitter, best to get one that's housed in a waterproof sleeve, and a touch of silicone grease on the F's never goes wrong if you want it to last. Have you thought about using diplexers to combine terr. & Sat on the one cable? Can save a lot of double-runs.

Your first question should be "how do i know if i can split my Aerial Feed" and without a meter your doing it blindly, taking another feed off is fine but consider do i have enough SNR/MER to do an Passive split or do i need a Booster of some sort to compensate for the low output.

Typically an external Masthead passive Splitter will lose around 3db per output so a 2 way you lose 6db per ouput plus the odd .db per meter of loss from the cable run which should be negligible.

The other question if your having Sky installed and its Sky themselves which it probably will be i doubt the fitter will touch anything he is not suppose too unless you cross his palm with silver LOL

Right I have thought about it and here is my plan. I just hope I get a Sly Engineer who will comply, even if I have to gift him a crate of beer ;)

I have a dish I fitted at the back of the house. This feeds my F5s and Openbox S9 (thanks Manic01) in the back room and the front room. To get to the front room I went into the soffit and through the loft, back out of the front soffit. I know this is something the Sly Engineer will not do again, but hear me out.

He will install a new dish. He will likely position it on the back of the house above from where I did.
This will be on a flat wall which will allow him to drill a hole into the loft area. I will get him to take the current feed off the lower LNB (I will be in the loft to push this through, I will have already disconnected in prep) for the front room. I will also get him to feed a second cable through which I will then pull through the loft and feed through a small hole in the ceiling of our bedroom which is where I want the other feed for multiroom to be.

The spare LNB's on my dish I will use later to feed another room. Not his concern.

Now, whilst he is up on the ladders, I will ask him to feed my terrestrial cable through the soffit. I will then connect this upto a splitter which will go back out to the front room and then I will have another 3 ports for me to feed the rest of the house when I decide to.

This way he does not need to go over the roof with the cable saving time and effort. It also means the weather proof box I have bought for the terrestrial cable will be inside the loft, easy to access and maintain. It also means the only hole he is drilling to get cable in is into the roof.

I just hope he will comply.
