Just read that Sky have had the knock back, with regards to putting Prem football on freeveiw ( sky want to make payveiw ). Bad luck Ruppie

umm - not quite. sky wanted the same rights to air as top up tv use- not actually charge for anything else. Offcom has temporarilly halted this but temporarilly is the key. I dont see any reason why sky cant offer this as an extra to freeview viewers.

umm - not quite hawkish :).
Sky dont actually want same rights to air as top-up tv. They also want rights to sell their own branded equipment that would be needed to view the channels they want to provide, with their own encryption, so not part of the current freeview system. -It would certainly not be offered "as an extra to freeview viewers" but more as 'an alternative', basically first reducing the number of free channels for eveyone so you cant call that 'extra', then offering an alternative to Top-up TV so also not classed as 'extra'.

I DO see various reasons why sky should not be able to offer this and I'm sure the temporary will become a permanent decision. Sky is a satellite broadcaster, they should not be allowed to gain any control of terrestrial.

Thats damn good news. Lets hope it becomes permanent.

If Sky get their way they would fragment the terrestrial market by forcing people to pay for their custom equipment. I've no doubt that this would recieve freeview stuff ok but the present freeview boxes would definately not be able to get Sky's offering.

Sky would also likely subsidise equipment cost (no doubt by forcing you to connect to a telephone line for a year) and may even provide it free to build market share thus increasing their market share and ultimately dominating terrestrial TV.
