what is the reasoning behind the scala rings of the feedhorn on an lnb? Ive stripped down an MTI (sky) one to have a play with it.Is the scala ring stepping to help to catch the signal and then concentrate it to the centre of the feedhorn? if so i presume if you took away the outer 1 or 2 rings i.e: ground them off the lnb would have to be set more accurately, or would it distort/destroy the signal altogether?

I believe the rings are to help filter the correct signal from the incorrect signals. They dont really 'catch' signal, just help clean it from surrounding interferance. You will get a working signal with or without them.
However, if your surrounding interferance becomes higher than the signal you aim to focus on then you will lose picture. In the old analogue days we could see 'sparklies' as interferance, but with digital it is simply 'on or off' depending on how much signal/interference balance.

That makes a lot of sense m8. I got a few mti(sky) ones so am gonna av a play by cutting 1 down, 1 ring at a time and seeing what detremental effect it has.If it is ok on the stronger signals it may help me on my multi lnb setup as in getting them closer together on some of the tighter settings.from what you have said, i imagine that cutting them down by more that 1 ring's width might fook them, but 1 will probably give me what i want.

Interesting experiment, let us know how it goes. I am sure you can cut quite a lot away, if not all rings, before you see any difference.

could also try the triax alps lnb's they are made specifically for close mounting on a multi bracket, ( i think anyhow ) just checked and my supplier has them on their website at £2.38 but 0 items in stock.

£2.38...sure??? Anyhow bud I'm sure that's for a single output whereas I need quads. Not sure bout the alps 1s but i have 3 x Inverto multiconnect slim quads and tho the front ends are slim, the back end are fat ass things which still stops you getting them close.I've also read bad reports about the slimline 1s especially in the rain.i have a toroidal dish that i aim to have 16 lnbs on when I'm done and there are only a few birds that i have difficulty on squashing the lnbs together.Only have 8 setup at the mo til i get roof mounted....still on the floor at the mo...its a bit of a monster!!

Nice, yeah thats the price I had to look a second time myself, might have been a case of they not selling and to get rid, just practically give em away, try turning some of the quads upside down, think i tried that once havin a mess around and if i remember correctly it worked the same, kind of a ah ok cool moment then turned it back lol.
