Just been watching the news and the volcano erruption in Iceland has grounded all flights in and out of the UK. Will the ash cloud affect the sat signal at all?

Just a question and a heads up really if anyone suffers a degrade in SNR.

I was just thinking that myself.

So far I've not noticed any drop in signal.

Hi

I don,t think we,ll see any difference till the cloud comes more south.
Remember guys that most of the signals we get come from the south.

I can see another excuse for the delay in the TM800 now, Dust Cloud!!!!

it could affect satellite signals, but would mainly be at dusk/dawn due to the additional refracted solar radiation thats present at these times of day, and the dust would have to move quite a way south east to have any major impact. the main thing that would be affected is GPS signals, as these satellites are in all positions, so the signals coming through the dust could be weakened causing devices to take longer to get an accurate lock

more info here about the effects of the signals passing through the ionosphere

Dont forget that the cloud consists of a lot of sulpher so its likely you'll be getting acid rain. Your dish could visibly start shrinking as the Sulphuric acid eats away at it ;)

this is a definate, where i live, a lot of the houses still use coal fires, and if the dish is on the chimney, itll only last 18 months before falling apart. any scratches on your dish, even if its just where the bolts have been tightened and taken the coating off the brackets, will start to rust, quickly
