Quick question, does anyone know how to stream movies (divx etc) from their PC ->Dreambox? I can stream fullscreen video from Dreambox -> PC but can't for the life of me get it working the other way round.

Other question as well. My motherboard has 2 ethernet ports. At the moment, one ethernet controller connects me to the XP server in my house (for internet etc). The other ethernet controller connects the PC to the Dreambox via crossover. I currently have to disable the connection to my server everytime I want to communicate with the dreambox. Is there any way around this?

I have 3 network connections.... one is wireless, one is a standard ethernet port that connects to another device, and the other one is a standard ethernet port that connects to the dreambox.

Strangely, I dont have to disable anything. I can FTP, stream, webinterface etc without having to change connection settings. The dreambox is set to 192.168.0.24, and the ethernet adapter that connects to it has been assigned an IP of 192.168.0.2. My wireless network is on DHCP and maintains an IP of 192.168.0.4, and my other ethernet connection has an IP of 192.168.1.2. All work fine. I dont use the same nameserver/gateway IP address on any of the connections.

Forgot to add that I havent tried streaming this way before so don't know, but will give it a go.

To answer your second question you could do with investing in a cable/adsl router (not that much now) this will give you the ability to have (probably 4 fixed eths and wireless to if you decide to go that way) def a good investment.

As for streaming etc this is something else a router will help you with, as you need to be able to mount a network share (from what I have been reading this is mainly aimed at the other dreamboxes) but it is possible.

Your current PC would be the 'media streaming server' which would need to be setup in yer dream, this is where you are likely to run into some probs as the PC is doing 2 jobs via 1 connection.

Here's my exact settings for the two network connections:

---------------------------------------------------
LAN Connection (Going to winXP server)
---------------------------------------------------
IP: 192.168.0.19 (static for port-forwarding purposes)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (ip of server)
Pref DNS Server : 192.168.0.1 (ip of server)
Alternate DNS : Blank

------------------------------------------
Dreambox Crossover Connection
------------------------------------------
IP: 192.168.0.201
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.200 (dreanboxip)
Pref DNS Server : blank
Alternate DNS : blank

---------------------------------------
Dreambox neutrino settings
----------------------------------------
IP Address : 192.168.0.200
netmask : 255.255.255.0
broadcast : 192.168.0.202
default gateway : 192.168.0.201
name server : 192.168.0.201

Any ideas from that?

On dreambox (neutrino), try changing the default gateway and nameserver to 127.0.0.1.

On your dreambox crossover connection, try leaving the gateway/dns servers blank.

Thats the only difference between mine and yours setup.
(Apart from the IP addresses of course which are just a few numbers different, but in the same subnet as yours)

Tried that Liam and it didnt work. Cheers anyway for the help

I would fully go along with knet2020 advice.....once you got that router in, and i would advise a lynksys router, you would get the added benefit of a firewall, i have my, dreambox, dbox, and xbox all into the router and i can access all of them...probably even access the dreambox via the xbox

I'm not sure that I'd need a router. At the moment I have a 4-port switch attached to the server. Plugged into that are 3 PC's and 1 wireless access point for the laptops. I might just buy a bigger switch and run the dreambox straight into that.

I use the xp server for sharing the modem & printer. The reason I used that instead of a router is that it was cheaper as I had an old P2-266 lying around. It doesnt do anything but sit there. It's alright though cos it's easy as hell to configure for port-forwarding. I might be tempted to upgrade to a router though.

I love my router, my neighbours got the same one and we are trying to connect our pc's together via wireless network. its hard trying to work it out but we are getting there.

in theory you should be able to use his or youre broard band so pay for 10meg service 37pounds and split the cost (18.50each) an get 10meg download speed

Nah.....i just want to stream him some 4.3gb image files overnight rather than arsing around getting dvds to burn em onto......and its more fun...in practise i could sell 9x1mb broadband to all the neighbours ;) as the linksys router (with third party firmware) lets you set bandwidth levels for different ip's ;)

Here's my exact settings for the two network connections:

---------------------------------------------------
LAN Connection (Going to winXP server) - THIS MACHINE IS CONNECTED TO THE 'GATEWAY' SEVER?
---------------------------------------------------
IP: 192.168.0.19 (static for port-forwarding purposes)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (ip of server)
Pref DNS Server : 192.168.0.1 (ip of server)
Alternate DNS : Blank

------------------------------------------
Dreambox Crossover Connection - THIS MACHINE IS THE STREAMING SERVER?
------------------------------------------
IP: 192.168.0.201
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.200 > 192.168.1.19 OR 192.168.1.1 after reading the thread it's likely to be 192.168.1.1 (always the main 'server' i.e where your router is plugged into)
Pref DNS Server : blank > 192.168.0.1 (ip of server)
Alternate DNS : blank

---------------------------------------
Dreambox neutrino settings
----------------------------------------
IP Address : 192.168.0.200
netmask : 255.255.255.0
broadcast : 192.168.0.202 > 192.168.1.201 (Dreambox Crossover Connection)
default gateway : 192.168.0.201 > 192.168.1.19 OR 192.168.1.1 after reading the thread it's likely to be 192.168.1.1 (always the main 'server' i.e where your router is plugged into)
name server : 192.168.0.201 > 192.168.1.1

Any ideas from that?

I have bolded the settings you should change, not sure if it'll work but looks right to me, also you can test the network settings via the Settings > Network button this will give you some ideas, as long as the ping to the dreambox & default gateway work you should be able to get this working.

BUT to clarify...Lan Connection & Dreambox Crossover are 2 seperate machines, yes?

OK, firstly you'll need to download VLC software (www.videolan.org I think... doesnt matter which version you download).

Install it as normal and then start the program.
In VLC main window:
1. Click Settings menu, then Preferences.
2. Tick the "Advanced options" box in the lower right corner.
3. Click the + next to 'Interface' in the left hand panel.
4. Click on 'General' in the newly expanded list
5. Tick "HTTP Remote Control Interface"
6. Click the Save button, then click OK.
7. Exit the program and then reload it.

Thats that bit done.
THEN:

On the dreambox, Main Menu->Movie Player->Settings Menu.
Streaming Server = ON
Streaming Server IP = ip of your computer
Streaming Server Port = 8080
DVD Drive = D:
Directory(VLC) = C:/

Exit out of that menu to return to Movie Player main window.
Red Button (File via VLC).

If its configured correctly, you'll see your PCs hard drive.
Simply navigate to the file to play it.

If you want to play a TS file from a different drive, replace the "C:/" in the Movie Player settings with the drive letter of your choice :)

Thats how I do it anyway,
Liam

Tested this on my setup (laptop > dream) and works great :)

At my burds the now but I'll try that when I get home. If it works, I'm buying k-net a Jnr. G-man badge

OK, the network part didnt work but as long as i disable the connection to my server, I can access the dreambox easy so it's not really a bother. I'm just going to run the dreambox via ethernet straight to the switch so I should be alright. As for Liam's guide, what exactly is a TS file? I put an avi into the C: drive and followed the guide but the dreambox showed nothing under C. Does the file have to be in a certain format?

The file 'should' be seen under C BUT you may need to use the 'blue' button which removes the filter, so far I have had best results with .mpg also worth noting is that .avi (DivX eg mp4 format will NOT play) you may get the sound but you wont get the picture.

For some reason it hadn't saved the change I mage to the server setting for VLC. It seems to work fine (audio and no video as you said for avi). With Liam being a multi-genius, maybe he could cook something up for that?
