i used to use DreamUP with the crossover cable on my old pc but i dont have a com port on my new computer whats the best way to flash the image to the box?

Use another PC !

Failing that, you need to get a serial port of one form or another. The best would be a real serial port.

If your PC is a desktop then buy a standard PCI serial card. If its a laptop then a pcmcia/pccard type serial port would do the job (assuming you have a pcmcia/pccard type port).

Failing everything else, a USB serial port could be tried. I'd leave that till the last option though due to the very variable results from these devices.

Never had a problem with it too be honest, but I know it can happen but I always have my com port to fall back on if needed ;)

Although network is good for ftp/telnet and general playing around i've never found it that very reliable for flashing images etc. Always seems to crash my box for some reason.

Telnet is the only way I flash these days, but it's useless if the box has crashed, in that case then a serial cable is the only solution.

Get a USB to Serial cable - you can then use it from a laptop, if you need to

You can use DCC (2.96 here) to flash via network cable.

I rarely use flashing via network/ftp, as most of the time i will have to re-falsh with a serial cable anyway! worth a try though... if that dont work get a nul modem cable, or as recommended above a usb -> serial if you dont have a com port

I have been flashing my box through my wireless router for ages have a dbox and dreambox never had a problem just need to know the IP address and off you go !

same as me.

if your DB and laptop connected via router, then all you need to do is corrupt the bootloader (instructions on this site, just search 'bootloader'), then when you tyupe in IP address of your DB on web browser, there will be a dialog box where you can browse to the new DB image on your laptop, then can simply flash it across. takes couple of mins max., and works every time for me!!
