I have a box that is apparently has a broken null modem cable port. I tried flashing via dreamup and get no response. I have several other boxes from the same supplier that are fine using the same PC, cable etc.- so it is not settings.

When I plug in the ethernet cable I get a response. The box does not boot at all, light comes on and I get the 100mbps response.

I do not know the IP, I presume it might not have one, like a bad flashed box. I am used to dbox2s and you can use IFA to flash a "bad flashed box".

Is there similar software for a dreambox? is there a way to determine the IP, if it has one.

The box has never worked so it could just simply be broken. I want to test out before going to the hassle of returning it, even if the com/serial port is screwed it doesnt bother me if it can get going on the other port..

hi mate
can you lets know what image u got on them peeps might be able to post some of the default ips on the images

It was last to be flashed unfortunately I cant tell the IP as I had thought the same thing.
It is from www.dreamboxmagic.co.uk

they were very odd like 10.0.0.5.1

Without the knowing the IP address you are going to struggle m8, but I agree with what you said it sounds like it's broken, more than likely a general hardware fault rather than just the serial port being duff.

A friend of mine got a box from dreamboxmagic that only lasted about a month then just died, could be the quality of the clones vary from time to time, seems more people are getting failed units lately.

How about you connect your dreambox to a router , then go to the router config and look for the dhcp client list in theory if you can connect to it via ethernet it should list the ip address assigned to the box.

then just ftp the image to the box making sure you put it in the temp directory and its called DW.img , then telnet to the dreambox and use the command below to erase the flash and it will flash the new image and then reboot the box.

cd /tmp && eraseall /dev/mtd/3 && cp DW.img /dev/mtd/3 && reboot

But this all depends on whether you have ethernet connectivity or not m8

Cheers

you could also try contacting Zeus and find out the ip address,if its the same image thats on all his boxes he will know, did you try 10.0.0.7

If the box is not willing to boot up its likely there is no IP.
The technical hardware link from the network device at the box doesn't mean there is something started at the box which configured the network and assigned a IP.

unfortunately I do not have a router at hand. I could get a loan in a week or so but have to return it before then for the warranty.

I have emailed him just now. That IP does ring a bell. I think the gateway server had 127 at the start, and I was not able to enter that in my network settings, said it was reserved or something. Not sure if I need to set that though? is the IP all I need to know?

In that case is there no way to connect with FTP, e.g. IFA will connect on a dbox2 with no IP using a ethernet cable.

Also do people think there is any point trying other versions of dreamup? I used the one as given on the site selling it. But I have 4 boxes from that apparent same batch that did work on my PC.

open it up and check the serial port is pluged in and seated right :) then try dreamup again

cheers

Yes, I thought of that and in another forum it was recommeneded, they said it can be put in the wrong way too. But there is a warranty seal sticker that I do not want to break. If it was out of warranty I would try it. I am going to try some different versions of dreamup.

I contacted Zeus and he has said to send it back if that doesnt work.

zues boxes are fake and he offeres a 1 week gaurantee,so if its older than 1 week dont even bother sending it to him,he will just say that its out of gaurantee and charge you to ship it back,so ignore the warranty sticker as its just there to imitate a genuine box and he offers no warranty

The bootloader of a dbox2 is able to handle a network device and ask for a IP. The bootloader of a dream500 got no network capabilities. The dream600 box bootloader got also network functionality.
