right, dreamboxes run on linux surley theres a way to build a pc capable of runing an image that will deconde cable tv..

a smiple machine running on linux should work shouldnt it??

Unfortunately, its not that simple !

Firstly, the image is very tailored for the actual dreambox hardware and this is very different from a PC's hardware (you could probably get around this with a lot of effort).

Secondly, large chunks of the actual core DVB drivers are not open source.

Probably, the closest you can get at the moment is something like VDR although I suppose you could adapt the various dreambox applications to run with the standard linux DVB drivers.

hmm was just an idea, im not fully uptoscratch on programming so i doubt ide be able to atatck it myself.. i have a small idea how linux works and was gonna look into playing iwth it as i got 2 old low spec boxes doing nothing in the cupboard so was gonna see what i could do..

thanks for the heads up tho :)

You don't need to base it on Linux mate, there are plenty of cards and apps that run under Windows and they are much more user friendly than the Linux ones IMO, search for RitzDVB, MyTheatre, MultiDec, ProgDVB etc, they are very easy to setup and run, I used to run My Theatre on an old Celeron 400Mhz with 128mb of RAM, using a Technotrend 2.1 card, this had a hardware mpeg2 decoder so it did all the processing onboard, if you use a budget card without a built in hardware decoder then you'll probably need a higher spec machine to run it.

Linux setups tend to require less CPU power and offer more features, but I always found the Windows solutions more than enough for my needs.
