Would it be possible to update the firmware on normal dreamboxes to decode the mpeg4 HD signal that is received from channels such as Channel 4 HD?

I'm not talking about displaying the content in HD on a television, I'm talking about simply viewing it in SD via your normal scart but the source being the HD channel?

The reason I ask is that, as you may know, Channel 4 has recently went to Astra 2D and I know a lot of dreambox owners in my current location who would like to watch Channel 4 HD instead which we can still receive a signal for fine.

im only guessing but i cant see you doing through a scart to carry an hd signal
as a scart would only carry a sd signal
not unlless it was streamed through a pc with a dvi or hdmi card output to a hd tv.

I have a SkyHD box personally and I can view the HD channels through scart if I want (infact I watch HD channels through my scart video sender in my bedroom all the time) - but obviously it is displayed in SD because of the scart.

I am asking could we basically upgrade normal SD dreamboxes to decode the HD signal and display it as SD?

No, the hardware isn't up to it, a firmware update would be useless.

i always wondered would it be possible to stream the hd video raw to a pc and decode?

I think its possible to stream it with VLC, but it may only be the H.264 stuff. I think I remember people doing it with the BBC HD channel. It may well be different for Mpeg 4 streams.

all the best
