My box recently froze. After powering off and back on, it didn't do anything and all it does since is let off a little scream. I have a feeling it's to do with the power board or a capacitor leaking.

There is a hard drive inside but it's no longer connected as the power drain from the drive seemed to cause powering on issues which went away once I disconnected the cables to the SATA drive.

Time to get a new box?

If you have tried another psu with no change take out the tuner does it start then ?

If not it is usually the 4 larger caps directly behind the card reader think there 10 volt 4700 jobs

Don't have another PSU to try; ebay job? Taking out the tuner didn't make a difference. Looks like I may have to replace the caps. Best place to pick them up?

Usual get mine from Maplins but i have had them off ebay too. Try another PSU though.

Some router psu's will work just to try it

Tried with my router's PSU and that did the trick. I have one spare, should I use that or purchase a propoer DM one? If the latter, then just any generic one from ebay/amazon?

Good to see its worked out to be a easy fix guys n1 ;)

As Abu points out mate just make sure the amperage of the router psu is above 2 amps or it will cause problems when the box requires the power recording for instance or moving a motor.

As above. And note I did say only to try it . I think your router psu will not have a high enough amperage. Plenty of 3 amp ones on ebay ;)

12V 2.5Amps (minimum) will be fine.

I would like to try something with plenty of power which will not fry my box but will handle the following:

-internal SATA HDD
-external laptop cooling fan

Would the following be sufficient or should I aim for a higher amperage? JnDee™ 12V 3A 3 amp DC POWER Supply ADAPTER Transformer ## Great For Powering LED Strip LED TAPE Lights ##: Amazon.co.uk: Lighting

What's the max I can go for?

3amp is what the original PSU is rated at the box is only going to use what it needs to draw but i would not go over 3 amp. Why not go for a dm800 psu of ebay ?
