Some HD programs show black bars each side of the picture?

I assume this is because of how the program is broadcast?

This happens on things like the Simpsons? Do you guys get this?

I've set the screen options to auto scale, but the same thing occurs

mine set to just scale ben
but i think the simpsons still has the bars m8

yeah simpsons still has bars...............so annoying.

It's because it's being upscaled on a hd channel so the box doesn't see that any scaling needs to be done as the res will be 720p / 1080i but because it's a programme that originated in 4:3 rather than 16:9 widescreen it's kept at its normal ratio by the broadcaster. Flick back the the sd channel and it'll be all stretched to fill the screen by the box as it'll see it's 576i or 480p :) (or something like that lol)

Yep I noticed on the SD version of the same channel it was full screen lol

funny how people like things different
if a programme is broadcast in 4:3 thats how I like to watch it (with the bars at each side) and have the Dream set this way
its not so bad watching cartoons in the wrong (stretched) format but not life programmes

:)

lol too true m8 but I find the bars distracting, its almost like why when I have all this tech can I not watch it in full screen,
doesnt make a bit of sense I know but who said i was sensible lol

tbh the 4:3 ratio is nit broadcast that much now really at all
maybe on the older channels like Gold but id say ove 90% is all full screen now :)

What's worse is when sly transmit the program with the wrong aspect set as no matter what you do you end up with a tiny picture, had this with the recent 2 part 9/11 documentary. The first part was smaller than normal 4:3 but the start of the 2nd episode was even narrower.

There is/was a plugin called "curtains" i think it was

lets you change the look of the black bars to side curtains on the tv , with a choise of colours and patters, not sure if this works on the 800se though

warlord

Noticed this again on ITV1 HD yesterday even though it was being broadcast in 1080 :(
