Me again :),

I put a usb key in for the EPG which seemed to work quite well (it was a spare), but my Mrs wanted to record something yesterday and could not, and as you can guess I got moaned at for buying a new box that does nothing lol!!!!

Not sure what to buy so that is why I am asking you guys, but I am sure that Rat said I could go as high as a 1TB ?

So which is the best hard drive 1TB to buy for the dm800se. or one that works well for you all.

Would be great if it was pretty quiet.

Also does it matter about the RPM (speed of the drive).

Can you put a SSD (Solid State Drive) in them?

Thanks all

Mick

Im using a WD scorpio blue 500gb and its fine, done a bit of test recording yesterday and it was flawless :) quiet too didnt even hear it :)

Cheers Mate, how much recording time do you get on a 500GB, and how many rpm's is that 7200 or 5400 ??

Thanks for getting back to me, looked at the scorpio blue on ebay and they are around £50 for a 500gb.

or there is

WD Scorpio 1TB for about £30 more (£88) ?
Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB (5200rpm) SATA 8MB 2.5 inch Mobile Hard Drive | eBay
but that drive is 5400 RPM.

or some samsung drive 1TB (£52)

EDIT: FOUND THE 500GB 5400RPM for under £45 here

Some choices for members :)

Did you set your recording paths to /media/usb in the setup menu Mick :)

I personally think 500gb is plenty, but I dont record to save (maybe a few) so pretty much watch and delete most recordings

if you have the spare cash for a 1tb then get that :) more GB the better really :)

I did a 60minute HD recording last night but cant see how much space its used :err:

mine is a 5200 I dont think that makes much difference tbh mate

Jimux done a detailed post in the TM800 section about HDD and recording etc, see if I can find it :)

@Wiz, yes mate, I read about that pal.

However the key is a tiny 1GB (spare key) I just wanted to test the EPG and did not want to put the EPG on the internal flash memory.

just FTP'd to folder and the 60 minute HD recording is 5,466,777,176 is that bytes or KB ?
I dunno but its something to go on lol

Fair enough Mick just making sure as its an easy thing to miss,
1GB will be perfect for the epg and picons anyway :)

Just checked my hdd (500GB) & 1 hours worth of high def recordings is coming down at just under 5GB, have had the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB in my dm800 for about 18 months and ive never got close to even half filling it & thats with recording a lot of hd documentries.

im using a samsung spinpoint 500gb drive 5400 RPM, works fine. Less heat generated by 5400rpm drives not neccesary to have 7200RPM.

Thanks for the replies... if 5GB is a HD hour (roughly) then a 500GB will be more than enough!!!

Regards
Mick

i use an internal drive for recording, and a microSD card for epg, picons, and timeshifting
