Our first online update for Commando 14.7 comes only five weeks after release, so you will see that we haven't been letting the grass grow under our feet since then!

Before you go pressing buttons on your remote, please make sure you BACK UP your existing image and save it to PC. And please READ the important introductory note in the attached What's New? document before you start, otherwise (on this first occasion only) the online update will NOT complete properly.

This update is ground-breaking stuff, as it includes a SquashFS root partition reflash at the end! Don't forget- first RTFM (Read the effing manual)!

Then it's MENU > 3 - Utilities > Online Update

We were planning to announce this on Sunday 3rd March, but a server swap made it too risky. So we delayed for a day to let the dust settle.

Cheers- AL :)

NEW C14.7 Online Update now available!

We are delighted to announce that our second online update is now live for download and install.

If you have the 27 Jan 2013 release version of C14.7 installed but have NOT yet applied an online update, then PLEASE read the attached helpfile which will guide you through a SIMPLE manual step required to complete the upgrade fully!

If you did apply the 04 Mar 2013 online update, but remember it only taking seconds, rather than a couple of minutes with an auto-reboot, then YOU need to read the important info as well, please.

Users who DID successfully update on the second attempt can verify this easily. Go to the Audio Menu in Settings, and if you see the new 'Audio-Priority Settings' item at the bottom, you're all ready to run the latest update from the Utilities Menu.

WHAT'S NEW? Read all about it in the other attached document.

Cheers- AL ;)

Re: NEW C14.7 Online Update now available!

New in Updates

Commando 14.7 - first online update 03 March 2013 - What's NEW?
=====================================================================

A faster first scanning phase for AutoBouquets using scripting instead
of the automatic menu arrays. This now allows us to disable the remote
during this cycle, just to be safe. Messages and message timings have
received some improvements, too.

EPG cannot now be loaded accidentally (or by late Timers dropping in on
power-up) if AutoBouquets or mapautogen processes are already running.

18 new picons, thanks Ronan! Picon symlinks are also updated (Sky1 +1
and True Ent+1 etc).

Two new helpfiles for "Recording to a mounted drive" (thanks, Mickb82)
and for the new Audio-Priority feature by LraiZer (more on this below).
Plus updated docs for AutoBouquets, Customizing Bouquets, and GetEPG.
Not to mention this "What's NEW" readme.

Major enhancements to Set My Location to give the correct GetEPG ID for
regional ITV channels. A misunderstanding in 14.7 release meant that you
received the correct service, but everyone had ITV London GetEPG. Doh...

A 'smart-swap' special radiotimes.scan for the Irish channels line-up as
requested by users there. This removes some rubbish channels from the
Entertainment bouquet, then after the first five standard Irish channels
come all the UK versions of the terrestrial services, for richer (and
unblocked) content.

Whether in UK or Ireland, you'll ALL need to run SML again when invited
to after the root flash and auto-reboot. This will NOT affect any prior
customizations you may have already carried out, we promise!

Also new in the Main Menu > Utilities and EPG Utilities menus is a handy
Plugin tool that scans all vital files and converts DOS/Windows format
corruptions to Linux format, so they will work properly! This issue has
been a pain in the arse for many users for too long now! It only takes
3 to 4 seconds to sanitize the lot! We have to thank napster (and a few
others) for alerting us to the NEED for such a valuable addition to your
Commando tool box, LOL!

The update rounds off with an all-time first for us, (and any other Image
creators, as far as we know) by downloading a new 2.74MB root.img file.
This is flashed to your box safely and automatically in about a minute! It
adds a modded LraiZer's Audio-Priority Settings menu (last seen in C12.2
for dBox2 in July 2009) to your image.

PLEASE read the brief new helpfile for this! The default Audio is already
set to 'English (no narration)' for ALL channels. The update removes all
traces of our previous 'dirty' fix for audio.pids - which was focused on
the UK only. It is now open to International use (ie: ger, fre, dut, pol,
ita, and so on) and tests out superbly well using the 10 language options
in Euronews as our testbed. Thanks for suggesting we try this, LraiZer!

Updates will never change user-customizing files like bouquets.xml and the
EPG usermap files. Updates will grow on the back of each other, so it will
not matter if you missed an earlier one, you will still update fully!

Where an update involves an online reflash of the SquashFS root partition
(like this one), subsequent updates will have 'smart-checking' to skip an
unnecessary repeat of this root reflash exercise!

===============================================================
2nd online update 14 March 2013 (we never sleep...)

Added 'Deep level Parental Control' which is ON by default, meaning users
who want to access the pr0n channels now need to 'opt-in' for this. Please
read all about it in the updated AutoBouquets document.

Added a new utility in the Main Menu: 'Swap R/C Volume Keys'. See same doc.

Added our old C12 dBox2 'Wakeup Volume Menu' to the AutoBouquets menu. More
info on this in the updated Hints and Tips document.

Reports of lip-sync issues on Sly Movies since Audio-Priority re-introduced.
Testing showed this is 100% cured if we now have FastZap ON. This is a nice
bonus, as much faster channel zapping results, AND it seems to have fixed TS
recordings Playback issues, too! So FastZap=ON it now is, and ignore any
warning message you see in the Zapit menu to the contrary. (That message has
been changed in english and deutsch locales ready for the next root update)

Smart-checking expanded to avoid any unnecessary repeats of SML at boot.

Fixed a silly bug in our first update that had a spurious "GetEPG is about
to run!" message onscreen throughout the ENTIRE loading of GetEPG, doh...
(Nobody is perfect! But it proves we take note of feedback and act on it)

Commando- dedicated to never-ending development with a passion!

First time applying OnLine Update

Applying the online update for the very first time to the 27 Jan 2013
Commando 14.7 release image- IMPORTANT!
====================================================================

To update, go Menu > Utilities and press the 'Online Update' button.
After a few seconds and a couple of popup messages, you'll see an "All
done!" message. Do not believe it, because it is far from done...

Sorry, but in testing the very first online update for C14.7 we found
a silly syntax mistake in the /var/bin/online-updater script released
with C14.7 on 27 Jan 2013, doh...

Despite what the popup message says, this bug PREVENTED the update from
tidying up after itself, leaving a bit of a mess behind. Not to mention
that the new root image didn't flash. But DO NOT worry! Easy solution:

Using TuxCom, Telnet, PuTTY, FTP, or DCC, simply DELETE this new file:

/var/etc/version

And then run the Online Updater again, please. It WILL successfully
complete on the second attempt, because the offending script was
updated on the first download with our fixed one.

You'll only have to do this ONCE, because the fix is permanent!

Ever so sorry about that, but nobody is perfect... AL :)
=================================================================

ps: If any techies want to know what the bug was, here it is:

if [ -e /var/etc/install.tar ] ; then
/bin/tar xvf /var/etc/install.tar -C /tmp
/tmp/install
rm /var/etc/install.tar
fmsg "All done! Job's a good 'un! Bye-bye from us ;)"
sleep 6
$clear
fi

The /tmp/install line is the command to run an untarred chmod 755 script
to do the 'finishing-off' housekeeping, then branch to see if a new root
flash is needed.

Except that the install script is actually untarred to /tmp/var/etc/install
Result of course is 'file not found' - Arrrgggghhhh!!! ;(

Our new online-updater script handles this part far more elegantly...

Posted the above for those of you who wont bother downloading them to read but will complain when the online update doesnt work because of user error :)

Thanks Wiz, but crikey, m8! Those docs need editing for open posting, to take the linux hard returns off each EOL... (They're formatted like that to appear correct when viewed locally on the telly via TuxBox Commander when there's sod all else on telly to watch, LOL!)

You weren't planning on going out tonight, were you?

Cheers- AL ;)

What I mean is, Wiz- BEFORE:

And then run the Online Updater again, please. It WILL successfully
complete on the second attempt, because the offending script was
updated on the first download with our fixed one.

and AFTER:

I do try and stick to smallish paragraphs with line breaks in write-ups, as I know how hard it is to read some of those humungerous long posts we sometimes see on the forums, with like a solid block of text, no blank lines to break it up for making it easier on the eye...

Cheers- AL ;)

Before still looks better lol,

Must be getting old AL :)

Then on this occasion, we'll have to agree to disagree Wiz, m8. My edited para with no hard returns is 4 lines long and flows width-wise to fit the user's browser and screen res.

Your version taken straight out of the linux doc is 5 lines, with truncations. Not to worry, there's NO excuse for peeps not to see it now, either way round, is there?

Cheers- AL ;)

can anyone point to download link for this image, can find 14.6 but not 14.7
thanks.
