Welcome to DW, I can't comment on Nikon but I got my missus a Panasonic DMC-ZX1 Lumix with a Leica lens and it has never let her down. This would be an old model now but I have several friends with cameras from this series and none of them has ever had a problem. May be worth a look depending what you were looking for.
Which version; the J2, V1 or V2?
Just so you know it's a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC). This means you can change the lens on the camera, but it's not as big and bulky as a DSLR.
If you already have a Nikon SLR/DSLR system, you can get adapters to use your existing lenses on the Nikon 1. However, there isn't one to use Nikon 1 lenses on the Nikon DSLRs.
If you have DSLR from another marque, have a look at whether any of their MILC cameras have an adapter available to allow use of DSLR lenses.
Pentax have an interesting MILC camera out; the Pentax K-01. This uses the KAF2 mount system also found on Pentax's DSLRs. Which in itself has the added advantage of being compatible with previous K-mount lenses.
