These questions are based on the City and Guilds past paper 2396-402, this past exam paper will give potential electrical designers a good base to start on.

Remember the actual exam is 3 hours and has 10 questions, you might think 3 hours for 10 questions is a long time but you will soon find out that you need to explain your answers using the Reg's. and that time will run down very quickly. If you do not know an answer go to the next one and so on then IF you have time go back to the questions you have not answered.

City and Guilds are not looking for you to copy out word for word the regulations, they are looking for your interpretation and ability to use the Following Non Statutory Books

IET BS 7671
IET Onsite Guide
IET Guidance Note 3
IET Guidance Note 1

If you are an Electrical Designer or planning to be, you should own these books and be competent at using them.

Sample Question

A radial final circuit is wired using 70⁰C thermoplastic flat profile twin cpc cable having 6mm2/ 4mm2 copper conductors to a length of 46 m. The final circuit is protected by a 32 A BS 88-2 device. The supply and installation form a single-phase 230 V TN-C-S system with a Ze OF 0.05 Ω which is at the origin of the final circuit. Determine:

a) The value of short circuit current at the end of the final circuit. (7 Marks)
b) If the circuit cables have adequate short circuit protection. (6 Marks)
c) The suitability of the protective device for circuit Zs. (7 Marks)

Thanks Mick, Just stumbled across this forum when i was looking for these, just started this course.

How did you get on with it?

hey

it wont let me download for some odd reason. Does anyone know why?

You have to make 5 useful posts and wait 24 hours rather than make 5 posts in space of few minutes in hope of being able to download.

I have removed some of your other posts

I am doing my 2396 exam this Thursday night coincidentally (for me). The training centre provided us with past paper style questions from previous years. I have originally sat the old 2391-20 design, erection and verification course, and passed it also. This exam covers the same scope but I feel goes into a bit more detail. Difficult to balance design project and work commitments though.

Ihave two papers from 2013 they both look very similar and follow the same format. I wonder if anyone has more

Hi all, thanks for putting these papers up for download, I am booked to do my 2396 in Nov, exam Dec and feel I need all the practice I can find. I have my 16th and 17th qualms and my 2391 from 5 years ago and have mainly carried out domestic work with some small showrooms and the odd temporary exhibition stand. I now want to try and progress into employment at a more challenging level and thought this qualification would help, can anyone suggest any other sources for past papers and study materials outside of the 4 books quoted. Many Thanks

Hi All, I too will hopefully be taking on this Course and am looking forward to the project. Whats the percentage pass rate for this course? I hear its very difficult to pass?

Hi Guys, Any one doing the course now? Is there anyone doing the EAL version of this course and is the material any good?

I have notes from various friends that have done the course but some of it is useless and others and good but almost a re-run of the level three course that I had done.

How are is your course so far? are you happy with your provider? how do you find the project?

Hi Siriua,

The course provider I used was very poor. They are based in Harlow, just off the M11 and I would advise people to avoid. The person delivering the course had good knowledge but everything from course notes to practice questions were handed out on the last day or insufficient. I had to have my exam rescheduled due to administrative error but I guess that makes me luck as I have a little more time to prepare. From what I understand, everyone failed the exam.

The coursework looks the only part thats going to be okay but perhaps it because the it more student led...

Hope that helps..

Are the answers available for this paper anywhere?

The 1st scenario is a little confusing, to achieve to needed voltage drop, you have to increase cable size to ridiculous values, that aren't listed in the SWA table that accompanies the question.
