Cctv

It's a good while since I did any serious CCTV work, but here are my views:

The dome cameras' lenses are not varifocal, so you're stuck with the makers field of view. One size doesn't fit all. In this case it's quite a wide angle, so you will lose detail on more distant objects. Varifocal lenses allow you to 'zoom' (manually) to the optimum for your application & don't cost that much more. Also you might want something a bit more weatherproof if installing outdoors.
The DVR seems reasonable, but you'd probably get a similar deal in UK, saving shipping times & the risk of having to pay import duty. Also worth looking for hybrid ones (analogue + IP)
The hard drive is MASSIVE! 3TB seems a bit overkill for a small domestic system. If an 'event' occurs, you usually know about it fairly soon, so not much need for weeks' worth of storage.
@digi247 seems to know his stuff in this field, may be able to advise further.

Thanks for reply trevortron. I was going for 3tb as I was under the impression that HD recording would take up a lot of space and tbh it only works out another 35 quid or so over a 1tb. I hadn't noticed that the cameras were not ip rated so glad you pointed that out.

Do you know if there are any benefits between using ip cameras against hd-sdi or vice versa?

I think the most common benefit is the potential to use existing network cabling, but again @digi247 is the man with more answers than me. Also CAT5 probably works out cheaper (and less lossy) over long runs than 'traditional' coax.

cheers. Hopefully digi will be along soon then :)

@trevortron is pretty much spot on with his observation as with anything these days it appears Price is the main factor, But as technology has moved along so have prices.

I would say as advised above Run cat5E for ease of use and also it allows for future upgrades should you wish to convert from analogue to full IP.

Camera wise you could look at the 960H HD cameras with Sony Effio-E or P cameras they give excellent resolution for the price.

DVR wise again as above you have a choice some manufacturers are now coming out with 960H/IP that are powered through the DVR unit themselves instead of having separate power supplys although cost on these is still quite high but for a 4 camera system.

Kguard do a nice 4 camera HD/IP system with either a 1TB or 4TB DVR starting at around £550 comes with everything you need to install and get going.

If your on a tighter budget then Cif/D1 system will be more appealing DVR's are cheap if you buy without a hard drive and install your own good thing with these is you cam mix and match cameras etc..

If your going for a One power supply solution as in your links get a 5A/10A power supply which will power DVR and at least 8 cameras

Thanks digi. I found the kguard system you speak about and it comes with 1.3mp 6mm 45 degree lens cameras. I am probably trying to achieve outside my budget but was hoping to get at least 2mp so will prob risk ordering from china. I think trevertrons point of varifocal cameras sounds a good idea too plus I would ideally like to get a 8 channel dvr/nvr for potential future expansion.

Could you give me your thoughts on these please

Spec's & prices look good. If you are happy about ordering from China, search for 'securitycamera2000'. I found them through the Bay & have ordered several bits & bobs from them. Extremely helpful and again, very good prices. They are doing a 'special' on a DVR not unlike Ali's for $20 less. And 'easy set-up' usually means you don't have to muck about with port forwarding etc. for the remote viewing facility. A big help if the network is not your own/locked down.

Any chance of a link to the dvr please m8. All I can see is d1 and cif ones

I like what you did there mark lol.

Cameras, dvr, cable = China
Power adaptor, hard drive = ebay

They do hard drives on alibaba too mate, and PSU's to be honest they all come from china anyway ;)

Looks like you found yourself a nice little setup, I would be very interested to know how you get on mate, so jokes aside please keep me informed

Thanks for posting.

Mick

Believe it or not the hdd is 30 quid more expensive on ali than ebay

Yeah sometimes eBay does bring the bargains :)

before I get ordering the cameras could you guys clarify what this means exactly

5MP@10FPS, 3MP@15FPS, 1080P@25FPS video frame rate

@Mark_The_Yid I think that is 5 million pixels at 10 frames per second, 3 million at 15, and 1080p at 25 frames per second.

The more frames per second the more space it will take but the higher quality it will be

Yeah but I'm just a bit confused as to which I should be taking note of. Looking through all the cameras on there they just state 1.3mp or 2.1mp etc. So which figure should I be using on this camera? Or am I misunderstanding the whole thing?
