Hey people,

I want to look into getting CCTV for where we live. Its a private development and currently have nothing in place. Im looking at something that will be digital and low maintenance, being able to link via a network would be good too.

I was wondering if anyone had some knolledge of this sort of thing? I know a few members have home CCTV but was thinking summat a little more industrial altho i am open to all ideas.

Im thinking wireless would also be a massive advantage but guess talking mega money?

Here is a pic of where i live and a little idea of where i would like to put the camera's. If anyone thinks they can be placed in a better place then please say.

Thanks

Ray

alright mate not a straight forward one to answer without havin a look in person, it would depend on a few things all the cams need power, and an internet connection if you want to use IP cameras and you would need a network video recorder or pc and central management software, for a decent night-time image the cams would need to be high-res and true day-night with ir and the street lighting would need to be good as ir is limited by distance unless you install ir flood lamps, all this wont work out anywhere near cheap, my experience is the cheaper you go the less satisfied youll be.

other option is wireless, the cams will still need power at their locations but your limited by distance and line of site but if you used them you would only need to use a decent DVR with ethernet connection but the cams would still have to be same spec as above to capture a decent image at night.

even cheaper but not a good option and no internet streaming would be a cam connected to a cheaply sourced time lapse vcr at each location.
have a prowl on the net using some of the info iv gave an youll get an idea on price.
hope the sheds some light mate

as already said without looking it may not be that straight forward.

All cameras would need a power supply hard wired or wireless. That may not be a problem as the power could come from the individual buildings. Not sure how good wireless technology is with this as I've only had dealings with hard wired systems.
The area looks quite large so hard wiring may prove very expensive.

You could consider stand alone cameras/recorders at each location but a bit of a ball ache to monitor. As for camera locations that all depends where your trouble spots are. If you have youths hanging round then you need to concentrate on where they congregate and force them into areas that are easily visible. If its for car theft/vandalism them parking areas and roadways etc etc.

Where I work we have had our installations designed and installed by a company in Birmingham. I can pm you the details if needed.

Cheers for info mate. Are u in the business? Just wondering what price I will be looking at. I'll have a look myself once I get home.

Not in the business myself just had to manage the installation for work. I tis difficult to price but I wouldn't be suprised if it was at least £4k to have someone supply and nstall it.

you may also want to look at the legal aspect of your intended setup as it can easily be considered as a public space CCTV setup. meaning you may require a SIA cctv license. also you may need to review the data protection act as it applies to CCTV.

i'm only telling you this as i am a licensed CCTV operator.

Can you get round this is if the material is only viewed after an incident has happened i.e not monitored all the time?

not if the cameras have the ability to record members of the public.

yes was in the business as installation/service engineer and had to do most of the surveys, not easy to give you an aproximate price without knowing your requirments and what you expect to get are, as said by severus hard wiring is probably not an option due to the price and installation logistics (thats why i didnt even mention that in earlier post), unless you got the local council involved with help, permisions, grants and the legal side as pheonix mentioned regarding the data protection act, it would have to be a proper & registered electrical company to do the installation as your dealing with 240v

if your intending on doing this as a diy job with permission and help/money from the other residents as i think you are, apologies if im wrong, then youll be cheaper to go wireless with its limits or a cam and recorder with network in each house an connected to the net

also have a look at these
