Hey,

I was wondering if it was possible to set up a web cam to record onto a laptop?

My friend has a Barbers and she believes there is a member of staff stealing money from the till so i wondered if i could set summat up and hind the stuff in the roof to record and catch her in the act?

Or is there any other better options to catch her in the act. There is a small cctv camera installed in the shop but this person dont put it on when she is in the shop alone.

Thanks inadvance.

This needs to be handled with care as you shouldn't have a concealed camera on your staff. It's better the employer informs their staff of any cameras.

Here is a helpful link about this sort of problem in the work place Prevent staff theft: Talking Retail's how to guide

Trouble is prevention seems to be better than cure here.

Hey fudgie,

I know where your cummin from here mate and understand and take on board everything you say and do agree but i dont think there is any other way around it. They no there is CCTV in the shop and there is a sign up too.

Its only a small Barbers and the individual keeps opening the till (no cash sale) but the owner cant prove she is having the money away.

Thanks for the link too, will pass this on so she can read it.

There is plenty of webcam security software available (just google it) and many webcams come with software as well. If you don't want the laptop sitting near the camera then get a network or wireless camera (assuming you have wireless in the shop). These can be had for around £60 for a basic model. Something with good reviews such as Linksys WVC54GCA goes for around £80 to £90.

manonamissionblue sorry didn't reply.

It's tricky one, if it were my business I would get a family member in to watch the staff and just keep an eye on thing's.

Also I would have a staff meeting and inform the employees of my concerns and be open about it. But I wouldn't accuse anyone just reinforce the fact that stealing is not tolerated in the work place. Keeping in mind most people are honest and would agree.

This maybe enough to scare the thief or someone else may come forward who has witnessed the act.

Not sure if this is going to be cost effective but I have a QNAP server (TS219) and you can run 2 x remote ip camera's from it. I have not tried it yet but will be soon :)

I'd put a dvr in, set it to record on motion only, connect the existing camera to it (if it's a decent one) and add a covert one over the till. Most dvrs have a minimum of 4 inputs so 2 more cameras could be added if needed.
The member of staff already knows cctv is in operation and still has their fingers in the till, so I say catch and sack the fecker.

I got an Avermedia one from here.

DVR digital video recorders

Connect it to your router and watch the recordings remotely too!
