I actually have braked car hubs on my trailer. Ive been changing bearings on the wheels which involves taking off the front hub assembly, it was very hard to pry off and in doing so the shoes have came off mangled breaking springs and rusted screws making it unusable...

Can the hub be put back on without the shoes, it doesn't feel like a nice tight fit like before but are the shoes required if its a non braked trailer...

Are you sure its none braked, seems odd to have shoes in if its not ?, or perhaps there inertia driven safety brakes M8 either way be careful if they should be in and you omit them then insurance problems may arise should a claim be needed

Are the breaks not cable operated by a lever near the towing bracket?. Slacken the adjuster off and the drum should have fallen of without any disruption to braking components.

This is normally how the handbrake functions with an additional chain/pull setup that brakes the trailer should it come apart from the hitch.

If the drums have automatic adjusters then this is a possible reason why the drums/shoes were difficult to remove in the first place due to the adjusters over compensating for worn shoes by adjusting them past there limit, ive had a couple of small cars do this and afraid the only to remove them is as you,ve done and then replace the damage parts.

This is what I'm left with, with the front hub off, ill get a few pics done later of the removed hub and inner shoe.

Im wondering if i should just get some stub axles with hubs and weld them on, or whether it will be ok to use my current hubs without the shoes...

This is just a small 6x4 utility trailer, it is definitely unbraked..

Ah now all is clear, with the look of those leaf springs your trailers is capable of carrying some weight, hence the brake system so if the stubs and wheel bearings are ok refit them without the shoes provided your not gonna shift 2 ton of hardcore in it.

Is this an Homebrew trailer ?.

If it is just a trailer then the brakes are not an issue on it. That back plate looks shocking, take it off and wire brush it and paint it while it is stripped down. if you have done the wheel bearings you should be able to just stick the drum back on minus the braking system it is not needed. However on saying that once the trailer is un-hitched from your car you must chock the wheels of the trailer to prevent it rolling. It looks like a made up axle and it has probably seized the brakes up at some time due to never being used.

What sort of weight are you loading the trailer to?

Without brakes you have a maximum 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less

Thanks for your help, I must give it a good clean with wire brush on the grinder and will paint it, it's only the front hub face that touches the wheel I can't paint, correct? Mind you when painting the steel wheel I painted all of the inside, it should be ok, it will burn off yes??

the trailer is only used sparingly, it's handy to have, will never be used for anywhere near max weight.

this was just an old trailer of my dads that was sitting for scrap for years. I thought I'd take the time sorting it out and really I wish I hadn't bothered...lol, the amount of time grinding back rust...anyway the frame came up perfect, painted black and got cheap aluminium plate from a guy at work, LED lights from China..does look the part now from what it was before..

get these hubs sorted out and that's it...

You can paint everything, all that rusty back plate and all the main hub on the outside.Plenty of grease on that stub axle before assembly and don't over tighten that hub you want it turning freely and put a new split pin in it then. ;)

All sorted, wheels are spinning nice and freely now and got the electrics sorted on car for first time. The trailer was used on my previous car and looked quite straight in relation to the towbar.

On my current car, its def sitting at a downward angle. Is this normal?

Also will a jockey wheel be suitable for this type of hitch, its like an angle frame, not sure if the clamps are suitable.

Can you get jockey wheels that will keep the trailer from moving, sort of a handbrake effect..

You could get something like this mate it looks as if it will do the job for you. :)

Jockey Wheels

What are you wanting to do with the jockey wheel? They are only for moving the trailer around.

What is the max nose weight for your towbar? Probably 75kg, but could be 50kg.
