hi guys have a 51 plate mk3 2.0 tddi mondeo starts and goes tho after 5 minutes it losses all power starts to guder kicks out loads of white smoke before it finally cuts out....wont start again straight away just keeps turning over if i leave it for 30 minutes it will start and drive fine again.....To me it sounds like lack of fuel getting to the engine although that dont explain why it is smoking does anyone have any knowlage of these cars before i start spending money on thing like diesel pump and fuel lift pump.....many thanks

first of all dont start spending money on bits!

when last time fuel filter replaced?
how many miles on clock?
get some 1 with ford ids to diagnose it.

it could be anything from a stuck egr valve right the way to high pressure pump or injectors.

ive had the car 2 years and not had the filter replaces have just brought a filter today and a new air filter theres 225000 on the clock but it is a good car untill this has happened

White smoke usually indicates a fuel problem here are some symptoms that you can check.

White Smoke

Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.

Engine/pump timing out
Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly
Low engine compression
All of these may need to be confirmed by your local garage on a diagnostic machine as fes786 states in his post.

with that mileage i suspect the injectors or pump! common fault on the mondeo's

and blank of that egr valve too.

Hi,

Firstly I am no mechanic, but I have had the exact same problem on a 51 plate mondeo 2.0 tddi zetec about 9 months ago. Firstly some rough running for several weeks when the engine was under heavy load, then finally it gave up on the motorway in clouds of white smoke and would not restart. I had it towed to the family garage who tried to start it with no joy. The garage left it for an hour or so then surprisingly it started fine. The garage put it on the diagnostic machine and it brought up 3 errors about fuel pump?? Sorry I dont still have the codes. I spent a bit of time on google\ford forums and the error codes were linked to the fuel lift pump - from what I read, it was claimed that the original pump was under specified, and an uprated version was introduced shortly afterwards...? I purchased an uprated one (Bosch I think), off the bay and installed (about 1 hrs work - for a complete novice with a haynes manual!) and has been fine since. I appreicate your problem maybe different, but the symptoms appear the same....??? Maybe worth a try??

a diagnostic check will give more accurate info

u could have 2 cars exact same symptoms but 2 different problems

higuys thanks for all your replys as some have stated fuel lift pump...and yes that was the problem running like a dream again

glad u got it sorted m8
and nice 1 for updateing the thread
