Hey guys

My golf needs some serious work under the bonnet. I want to sell the car but the engine lets it down.

Got an oil leak as well which the garage reckons is from the sump pan although I think it may be from the side of the block and someone reckons it cold be from the timing belt shaft/cam shaft or something along those lines.

I just wanna make it look presentable, maybe some chrome or at least some way to make it clean and shiny. The piping and wiring i'm thinking might as well be changed or cleaned or colour coordinated.

I was messing around on Photoshop and had a play around with colouring the engine, but keep in mind this is just an idea and probably too extreme, I think a simpler more elegant solution would be best:

Is it better to work on the existing engine, or replace parts or just have a whole engine transplant? Also, I'm planning to put a second battery on the bottom left side for normal car electrics and starter and leave the right battery for ICE. This will be achieved by removing or redirecting the air inlet pipe for the air filter

Money is a constraint. The engine is 1.3 standard. Car colours are Black, Red and Chrome.

Want to get something started and get red of it as soon as I can

its pumping oil out the breather , u can see it coming out of the air filter .. if u remove the air filter top is it full off oil

go get the engine steam cleaned off first , and like smirnoff said looks like that filter pan is flooded in oil

Sorry, didn't mention that the garage overfilled oil and screwed it up. Took off the rocker cover and cleaned out the white gunk under it and cleaned oil off the spark plugs. So it's running properly. They cleaned out the oil filter area and changed the air filter itself.

I don't know if it can be any cleaner! lol

head gasket has not blown has it?. HAVE YOU GOT COOLANT IN ? Is it losing coolant? Over filling of oil can cause serious damage if you have been driving it for a while with to much oil in

if the engine is only a 1.3, is it really worth it to spend money on it?? Gotta work out if you think the time and money spent on doing the work on engine will be recouped in the sale of the car.

i had a polo in with the oil service light flashing, customer kept putting oil in ,after a gallon was put in the breather sucked up the oil and dumped it into air filter 1/2 inch of oil car stopped due to hydraulic lock,so drained air filter housing
removed plugs and hand turned the engine to pump out the oil, drilled 3 holes in exhaust to drain oil out,put new plugs in and after 1/2 hour got it running and had to run like hell as the amount of smke that came out people thought the garage was on fire.took over a week for smoke to burn out of exhaust.

before restoring car check for major rust,as looking at photo may be more ahead of you, timing belt and pump done? low brake fluid, carb mouting worn/air fiter feels like not secure.

No it seems fine. The white stuff was just there as the car has been sitting for a year unmoved as I was saving up for bodywork repairs. I didn't drive it far at all, but did run the car for almost an hour to "try" and burn off the oil as it was pitch dark and we couldn't tell how much it was overfilled by. Found out when I came to recover it that they had filled up double the capacity!! They cleaned it out and I took it back on a recovery truck and cleaned out the engine myself

The car is modified so it's deffo worth spending a bit more to make it look its worth.

I hope there's no oil in the exhaust. I was told it may be timing belt area where the leak is coming from.

Sell it as it is, blue engine bay and black wings, has it had a colour change ?

Yeah Dutcho it has. Really want to try and make it look as presentable as possible

I really like this pic but got a feeling it will set me back quite a lot to get it done

I'm seriously stuck here. Don't know what I should do first :s

I don't have to do a full engine transplant, just gotta make it presentable, so I could use coloursed hoses and wires or at least get rid of the rust and make it look neat while fixing the oil leak

You could buy some of that heat resistant paint for the rocker cover and buy coloured wires and hoses. Just fix the oil leak. oh and check the bulkhead where the clutch cable goes through it looks a bit corroded.Don't go to mad with things to dress the car it is only cosmetic to attract youngsters and racers. That is just my opinion.

I was planning on using heat resistant paint. What colour do you think would suit the rocker cover? Chrome colour?

I don't even know where the the clutch cable bit is that you're referring to! lol

Yeah I don't wanna overdo it, just make the car seem worth its value.

personally looking at a car with coloured hoses and painted rocker covers, it would put me off, first reaction in my head would be that it had been thrashed ;)

I just wanna do a simple look to be honest, a few colours here and there cant hurt, anything is better than what it is now!!!

look directly behind the air filter make sure its not corroded where the cables run through, treat with cure rust and paint it with a primer then an undercoat then the finished colour. A chrome rocker would look good it looks a bit messy as it is.You can get engine paint as well. Cure all leaks first though mate. Are the wheels ok? put some aluminium paint on them and then put some tyre black spray on it will look great.:proud:

thanks mate. I'll take a look at the cables.

Wanna see if I can accentuate the VW logo on the rocker cover without too much work. I heard that I can get some special sticker that is heat resistant that is already cut out in VW.

The wheels are chrome rims so just need some of that tyre restore spray. Will need to do something about my rubber trims around the windows which have become dry and lost their colour
