Snow - winter tyres compared to summer tyres

Looks like fun.

If I lived in a country where there was snow more than a couple of weeks then maybe I would think about going to the expense of having 2 sets of tires at £800 a set and 2 sets of wheels to go with them.

Just shows the difference tyres can make though.

I have seen so many BMW X series drivers struggling this and last winter when 'normal' cars having been driving around with little problems its not even funny. Especially the X5, I don't know if its the car or the drivers but they really seem to struggle.

As for snow tyres, just too much of an investment for a the few days of truly undrivable weather. And the problem is that even if you can get around the roads are jam packed with people who can't so no point going out anyway.

Don't rate any BMW's in the snow they all seem to struggle more than other cars, could be the drivers in a lot of cases but not in all.

Would love to do the snow drive though looked fun.

i dont have a problem driving in the snow, i have a discovery 3!!:banana:

i dont have winter or off road tyres on my car, just wrangler tyres but to tell u the truth, they do look like a cross between a normal road tyre and an off road tyre so i kinda get the best of both worlds.

not rubbin it in guys but when ur driving past everyone that stuck in their cars struggling, the cost of maintaining my car and the mpg just doesnt matter anymore. lol. in the summer though, i wish fuel costs would come down

great if you live in the `sticks` but really not needed for us `towny folk`

other option i have seen in dublin are snow socks seen a few cars using them and flying around, how long they last if driven on tarmac then snow then tarmac,
new diy job on rear wheel drive vans thick nylon rope inserted around wheel through the outer eyes of rim and tied,4 or 5 to a wheel, plenty of clearance needed to avoid flexy brake pipes and handbrake cables.

That test is really flawed. obviously if you are going to drive like a maniac like they did in that video you will get those results.
Yes the tyres make a difference but also driving styles.
I think a lot more education is needed as we have over 50million cars in the UK.
Things like keeping distance between yourself and the car in front at least 10x more than normal. (had a van tailgate me on the m1 the other day when the tarmac was actually frozen. cars were facing the wrong way)
Also, you dont just slam the breaks on, thats just suicide. (like they did in the video). Gently tap the breaks. The less break you apply in ice the more affective it is.
Turn into a corner rather than out and slowly...wide in so you dont slide outwards.
Drive safe peeps!!

correct people dont know how to drive in these conditions, seen loads of bmws and mercs abandoned all because they dont like snow and ice, also doing a three point turn in middle of road and getting stuck, funny how traffic lights and road signs are ignored also:proud:

My wife drives a small Suzuki Jimny. It's absolutely stunning in the snow and cheap to buy and maintain. Low range box to get up even the worst this winter has sent us and brilliant reliability. The only problem it has is that it eats front wheel bearings, but I can live with that. I've never seen one broken down on the side of the road but I've seen quite a few landies/rangies this winter. Pointless having the ability to drive any where you like if it doesn't work :banana:

Was watching an L200 trying to get up our street when we had snow earlier in the year. It failed miserably. The wife tried it for fun the night before and did it easy as did an old Range Rover who was showing off ( he made me laugh )

As for the BMW's. I think they are just rubbish at 4 wheel drives.
X series by Jezza :)
