got a Zafira 52 Plate 2.0 DTi Y20DTH

got management light on, read code and its P0704 - clutch switch

took it to mechanic and the clutch kit needs replacing £300 in total

anyone here can advise me if this is correct.. could do with a second opinion.

Does it drive and get the gears ok ? Might be a wonky sensor rather than the clutch it's self ;)

drives ok but not as smooth as one would expect and gear change is good..

when mechanic took it for a drive, he did say the cluth was slipping

how easy is it to check for switch from inside of car.. any tutorials online (like Hayes) how what to do to access the switch.

Do this:

Hand break on, And try and take off in 3rd, If it tryed to move and stalled there nothing wrong with your clutch

If the rev's rise and you can put the clutch all the way out with out it stalling then its slipping and needs replaced.

Its a bit of a primitive way of telling but it works - Just dont do it too long otherwise you'll destory the clutch.

remove clutch switch and check continuity with a dmm on ohms it should be a four pin switch check both throws for continuity
and also be very carefull trying the cluch slip method with modern dervs with dual mass flywheels

but the code sugests wiring or bad contacts rather than clutch position ?

how easy is to to access the clutch switch from inside the car, do I need to take out some panels ?

Yes the switch is at the top of the clutch pedal, it is a simple on/off or make/break switch just remove the switch put a multimeter across the switch and work it in your hands. Simple test.

The clutch switch is electronic and has nothing to do with the way the clutch works, it's purpose is to tell the main ECU the traction control module and a few other bits and pieces, that the clutch pedal has been depressed or released, thats it, thats all it does. Having not driven your car I couldnt say if your clutch is slipping or not, but if the garage is saying that replacing the clutch unit will cure the fault codes then its a big fail for them, get an independent opinion, get the switches checked over.

info from

Vauxhall Owners Network

you might find more info on there

ok the RAC guy just been and done some check

the clutch switch was faulty and that has been fixed

but the clutch is slipping, so the clutch does need replacing

ohh well. atleast got a second opinion

well it couldnt have got any worse

took it in to garage this morning to replace clutch

get a phone call saying flywheel is knackered

so had to replace flywheel as well.. £650 pounds

as mechanic said, recent vehicles use the dual mass flywheel which are prone to more damage compared to the old one piece flywheel

Zafira and Astra clutches have been a big problem for Vauxhall.

They issued a bulletin to replace the clutch and flywheel if the customer complaied enough about judder. Had mine done and a couple of mates got theirs done under warranty.

Unfortunately yours appears is out of any warranty period.
