One of my vans oil lights comes on (red light) and then goes off it sometimes goes on and off (flickers)

Been like this for about 4 days now... checked the oil level and its alright.

Added a little bit of oil to top it up about a litre... seemed to make it go off for a while.

Whats wrong with it lol... can I fix it or should I take it in to the garage... sorry guys I know nothing about motors.

could just be your oil pressure switch shorting out. have you seen any oil leaking micky. If not find the switch screwed to the engine block check the connection and if any doubts change it. goodluck micky keep us posted

had this myself a good few yrs ago on a old xr3 yer that long ago. turned out it was the wire mesh on the oil pick up pipe was blocked in the sump.just a thought

i would say oil pressure switch also..

the oil light comes on under low pressure not low oil..

could be dodgy wiring if not the sensor itself...

Had it on a Transit were i use to work, turned out it was the oil pressure switch.Cost around a tenner

note of caution same problem on a4 1.8t oil light flickers,i was told the strainer in sump has a finer mesh and becomes blocked because of not checking the correct grade of oil for your engine, when oil pump strainer is blocked strange noises are heard=marbles in engine sounds, lucky the correct oil used on regular servicing and oil pressure checked all ok and replaced hopefully faulty switch.
by putting it on long finger engine damage may occur and costly.

Yeah a friend told me that I should take it to the garage because if the oil pressure goes then the whole engine can blow and cost thousands :(

So I will take it tomorrow... ffs really busy right now no time for this :(

anyway lol, better to get it sorted than to end up with a blown up engine...

Does anyone know where this switch is exactly on the engine because I do have a euro parts 5 minutes from mine and can buy the switch... just incase and change myself ???

Thanks everyone

Mickie

It does sound like the switch if not its a blocked pick up pipe. You will find the switch on the front of the engine block.

in my old works transit when i used to fit windows, we solved this by putting a bit of black insulation tape over the light, no more flickering :proud:

Its a hightop lwb will that be the same place ?

Sorry to such eggs and all but is this switch in sight or do I need to open things... will go out to the van in a min and have a little look

have i found someone who knows less about engines than me????

Its been a good few years from i worked on one from what I remember its a few inches above oil filter which is the left if facing the engine

Oil switch is the easy option to try but if the van hasnt been looked after very well then you do get shit building up in the sump, this will block the mesh (as someone has previously said) and stop the oil getting where it needs to go.

Sump off job to clean.

You could try a engine flushing oil to see if that can dissolve the blockage but these sometimes do more harm then good. Sump off and a good clean is the only way for me ;)

Digi and I may be down your way sooner than you think, maybe we could take a look :)

where is this sump and would that involve draining the oil ?

I have the oil for this van as I bought it when I bought the van lmao 2 years back .

Where is this sump I am off to look at this fooking thing now (sorry about the swearing)

Help lol ;)

Went to garage today... actually its a tyre/exhaust place I know the fella well.

I bought the oil, oil switch, oil filter, oil treatment, oil engine flush...

They changed it all while I waited it took about 30 minutes, and they charged me £25, I gave the machanic doing the job a tenner to make sure he done it all lovely, fella was well happy lmao.

Anyway He got out a special wired light attached it to part of the battery or something close to the battery, and said this is the oil light, switched the engine off then on, and the light (he had) went off... he told me there is something else wrong with the electrics, and the oil pressure is fine.

So is he right its the electrics or could there be something else with the oil pressure... he told me the oil pressure is fine.

I do not want a blown up engine lol.

Thanks for any help.

basicly he by passed the oil light
he put the test light he had on the switch and on the positive side of the battry
and when he turned the engine off it was off and when he turned it on it was on then started it went off
meaning the switch and pressure is ok
it may mean fault in the electrics

fit an oil presure gauge

Where can I get this gauge lol ;)

Where does it fit too... I think this might be the best idea.
