Hi guys,

Ive had a weekend of it - router decided to go and then the tv went pop so I'm on the hunt for another. I don't really have a clue when it comes to TV's I'm not really bothered about 4k and have a budget of around £500. Looking for -/+ 55" any suggestions please?

Also wouldn't mind recommendations of which manufacturers to go with... :)

Thanks

I don't have a specific model to recommend, but I researched a lot of different brands about a year ago. I ended up getting a 50" Samsung which I've really enjoyed. One piece the of advice, if you end up going with Samsung, do some research on "panel lottery". Unfortunately on some models they mix in lower quality LCD screens.

I bought an LG end of last year. Very happy with it.

LG 55UH605V Smart 4K Ultra HD 55 Inch LED TV with Freeview HD

cant see past LG or Samsung. One consideration to take on board is smart tv option. Lg and Samsung have good smart tv options although Samsung is going to be dropping youtube in June

One other thing to look out for is the viewing angle. My last Sony would loose color saturation when sitting at an angle. I was always disappointed with it.

Thanks guys,

Ive currently got (and had) an LG which on the whole are ok, I'm not too fussed about smart TV as I have an htpc plugged in next to it with Kodi so all my watching comes from that. I'm more interested in bang for buck (was tempted with 3D for the novelty) There are just sooo many TV's out there - too many to choose from if I'm honest.

Sony LCD's always disappoint IMO. Over-priced and lack-lustre audio & video. But they do seem to last.

Don't overlook Panasonic @shabbaranks- maybe a couple of quid dearer than their Korean counterparts but (with the exception of their cheapest models) still seem to be well put together. Many of the old 'trusted' brands (Toshiba, JVC, Grundig for example) are just re-badged cr*p.

great picture on this one.

Are Philips any good (or is that me being snobby?!) and with regards to manufacturers - I thought there were only a couple of panel manufacturers out there and all the others manufacturers just used them?

I bought a samsung 4k tv at xmas and love it. Might be the budget end and not be up to some peoples standards, but it works on my xbox one with hdr and when i watched 'The martian' 4k version it just blew me away!

Philips & LG share a panel plant. Quite often see Samsung panels on branded Vestel efforts. I haven't had many Philips sets in for repair so that can't be a bad thing, but I haven't seen any recent sets to be ale to comment on PQ.

Buying a Sony means your actually buying a Samsung as they share panels as well, there are only 2 panel types in LCD/LED IPS or VA.

IPS is the cheaper option and can well most of the time be Crap, VA is the one to go for but you often find that VA panels which have better uniformity are only used in sets costing around £1500 upwards, Unless you get last years model which will be greatly discounted

I've never seen a Sony with Samsung boards in it or vice versa,

Never said the Boards i said 'Panels' a good friend who has been a TV engineer for over 35 years and works on LCD's/LED's confirmed this, Sony may use there own proprietary chipsets and software but they use Samsung panels. Samsung wont use Sony panels they dont produce them anymore.

The IPS panels are mass produced so any manufacturer could use what they want

SAMSUNG UE55K5600 i don't think does HDR

I personally like the look of this one

Philips 55PUS6401

AS it says it does HDR plus as well as other impressive specs for that price range.

Forget the samsungs they are only 1080p the phillips is nice but runs android and if its anything like the android on sony TV's its as flaky as shit, also out of the 4 HDMI only 2 are HDMI 2.0a the other 2 are version 1.4

The LG has 3 HDMI which are all HDMI V2.0a so full HDR compatible.

If you want something that will support the BBC iPlayer 4K HLG/HDR channel latr this year then you would have to either buy a 4K model from this year or one of LG's Super UHD models from last year for full support

Is HDR mainly for gaming? As I don't play games.... And I'm none the wiser as for a tv now :(
