BT is aiming to provide internet services for DTT operator Freeview, the Media Guardian reports today.
The telecoms company wants to sell such services to customers using the new generation of set-top boxes, which will be released early next year.
BT believes that Freeview, which replaced the collapsed ITV Digital in September, will tempt people away from rival cable offerings, giving it the opportunity to recapture areas of the telephony market.
"BT sees that if people take Freeview then they may not subscribe to cable or maybe they will even leave cable," said Andy Duncan, BT's head of new ventures.
Unofficial reports say that up to 30,000 DTT boxes are being sold each week.
