New Tv has arrived for my Daughter and she wants her surround sound wiring up to it. Problem is the Tv has spdif and the surround sound is optical. Can I buy a cable of this nature to compensate? and is it a success. Thanks

Just been to a well known electrical store C***s and they are saying it is impossible for a lead that has optical connections one end and a jack plug on the other to work. Is this true? I believe you guys more than these jokers. I am going to buy this lead first and if it works extra brownie points all round. If it doesn't I will go @digi247 's route. Thanks again guys.

Sorry miggy i can't help much more, ive never had a set up like this, mines just optical, i just did a search on ebay for you, i hope it works though, i see no reason why it can't be done.

There are only 2 types of SPDIF cable one is coaxial as i explained signal is transferred electrically and SPDIF Optical cable which uses Fibre optic cable and transfer the signal through Light impulses the lead Kryton linked to will not work that is a pure SPDIF/Optical cable with one end designed for a mini jack SPDif connection.

Most TV's will have an SPDIF/Optical connection on the rear and not coaxial where as Most consumer Surround systems will either supply just an SPDIF/Optical or an SPDIF/Coaxial connection sometimes they have both coupled with some stereo inputs to boot.

And yes the so called superstore rep is correct you cannot by an all in one cable that converts electrical impulses to light impulses on the fly and vice versa, you need a converter to do the job for you.

The one i linked to is a one direction solution so does Coaxial IN to Optical out you may need an Optical in to Coaxial out which would be this one: Aptii - Optical TOS SPDIF TOSlink to Coax Coaxial: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

The cable is due tomorrow Kryton. I will let you and digi247 know what the outcome is then. :)

Right well that lead as i previously said will not work you will need this that i posted earlier: Aptii - Coax Coaxial to Optical TOS SPDIF TOSlink: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Which converts electrical impulse to light impulse and you will need an Optical lead: Cable Mountain 1m HQ Gold Pins with Metal Case TOSlink: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

and a Coaxial lead: Sivitec 1.5 Metre Digital Coaxial Cable SPDIF Audio: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Thank you. I have ordered the full set as requested. It should all be here by weekend. Best to have everything on site ready so there is no messing about when i do it. :)

Sorry for the wrong advice mate.
Hope you can cancel that cable.

Your advice was my first and cheapest option first if that failed then digi's advice was then bulletproof. I have found my answers with the help of both of you and it is much appreciated. Thank you.

Right here is the update guys. The cable unfortunately didn't work it was the wrong jack plug connector. The digital gadget worked a treat @digi247.All up and running. Thanks again @Kryton and @digi247. Job done. :)
