Hi all

Neighbours TV won't turn on, got standby power light .. Push on button and the light changes colour for a second then goes off. Then just flashes red on and off.

I have taken the back off and found what looks too be a swollen cap ? Centre left of the pic

any advise on if this is likely the power board ? And any repair ?

Tia all

It is the power supply board. As for the cap I couldn't say.

Worth a try. Defo looks to be bulging. I would give it a go. Just get the terminals right.

There looks as if there is at least 4 swollen caps on that board. I would check to see if there is a kit available for this board and change what is needed or maybe a re- conditioned board for it.

The two at the bottom right look as on way out.

The cross at the top of the caps do not look as recessed as other caps.

Been looking for a replacement board an only one found is £30-40 apparently new.

What other caps do you think are bulging mate ?

There is one to the left center and two at the bottom right mate. Look at the tops of the caps if they are flat they are the ones that are good the ones. The ones with the domed heads are faulty. If you look at the caps they have numbers/letters on them jot them down and see if Maplins can match them.

Think it might be the light and angle mate as to the eye they looked okay apart from one. I'll double check later tho, gonna have cap off board.

Right :)

Pulled the board and just taken off 3 caps.
16v 1000uF x 2
16v 2700uF x 1

The first two I've found on Maplin but I can't find the 2700 one :(

Try phoning your local Maplins up in the morning and ask if they have that cap in stock they may not have updated there website. ;) failing that, are there any TV engineer shops in your area?, they will probably have draws full of them. Say pretty please to them, and I am sure they will oblige in selling you what you need. :)

Yea no rs components in this area I don't think (Dagenham).
Will call Maplins in morning and see if they have them in stock. I can't imagine they won't tbh.

If You use ebay there are some HERE or if You prefer a known company Farnell have them HERE

replacing the caps should cure it, how ever if you do end up replacing the board don't just order one by the 17PW? number, that's just the board number, you need to find a label with an eight digit number, starting 20 or 23 and order by that number.

There is also a poly cap that's famous for failing on the psu, so don't be too surprised if replacing those you have mentioned doesn't cure the fault. I can't remember the component ref. off the top of my head, but it's the grey rectangular one just to the right of the larger transformer.

Edit: It's C878
