Hi all

Hope someone can give me some sound advice.

I am after a 46 Inch LED TV for my living room.

I have seen two models that I particular like

The

SONY KDL-46W905A

AND

SAMSUNG UE46F8500

Will someone be able to tell me which one you would go for and why and pro and cons between both of em. Both are smart TV's and high end models of Samsung and Sony

Cheers

Sony's latest Bravia model is a high-end TV with plenty of premium features, including both Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners, 3D, smart TV and a PVR for pausing and recording live TV. We weren't impressed by the sound quality, but can this large set make amends with its picture? Read on to find out all the answers.

The Bravia fails to justify its high price tag due to poor picture quality and weak sound. At this price level, we were expecting an awful lot more from this TV and it just does not deliver.

What is it?
It is Sony's 2013 flagship Bravia TV with a stylish design that Sony call 'Sense of Quartz'. You get plenty of high-end features, such as smart TV connectivity and 3D, along with Sony's latest picture quality technology.

What's the picture quality like?
The Bravia has Sony's Triluminos display, claimed to show more vibrant colours. But we found that it actually had disappointing and unnatural colour accuracy compared to the best high end TVs. You get plenty of picture adjustment controls, but even our extensive tinkering could not give consistently good colour accuracy on the TV.

There's good detail and resolution on Blu-ray movies and Freeview TV, but we'd expect so much more at this price level. 3D viewing is very good, but the viewing angle is one of the most restricted on a large TV that we've tested this year.

What about the sound?
Unfortunately, we have nothing positive to say about the way this TV sounds. We found that the uneven frequency range resulted in poor clarity and detail across all material we use for testing. There's not much bass and it's often hard to pick out dialogue from the muddled audio.

Is there anything I should look out for?
The standard remote control is uncomfortable to hold, with cramped navigation keys. Sony's One Touch Remote is supplied and, while it's useful for using with the smart TV features, it has no benefit beyond that - so you'll have to constantly juggle two remotes here. The web browser is fiddly to both access and use.

Is there anything else I should know?
Despite the poor remote controls, the TV is not too bad to use overall due to the well-presented and versatile EPG. You get plenty of HDMI and USB sockets. Built-in wi-fi gives access to a decent range of apps, although not as good a selection as Samsung's.

Should I buy it?
No. There are some good features here but picture and sound are not up to scratch. Better and indeed cheaper options are available, such as the Samsung F7000 or Sony's own W805.

Pros: Good EPG, good range of features and connections

Cons: Poor picture quality, weak sound, bad remote controls

They don't have one for that particular Samsung Model but they generally rate the Samsungs very highly.
Edit: their top 6 are Samsung and they have 8 in the top 10

I've read that Sony and Samsung have a joint venture plant producing the screens. You make your choice based upon the electronics.

Currently Samsung have an exclusive deal with ITV for their ITV player App. Depends if you are interested in this.

As Above correct Samsung Produce the Panels for themselves as well as Sony, You pay extra for a Sony just because of the Badge and the Different GUI it uses but at the end of the day its a Samsung Panel your watching

I've installed a good few TV's for customers over the years. I used to really like Sony's CRT sets, paid over £1000 for one in the 90's (a LOT of money then!) and it's still going strong. But since they moved to LCD, I have to agree with the Which? report. The picture just lacks vitality, no matter what you do with the settings. Sound quality varies between models but is never anything to write home about. And we're talking brand new sets, not 5 year-old knackers.
Early Samsung LCD's were nothing special either, but they've come a long, long way since & Sony's offerings cannot hold a candle to their latest models.
If you do decide to go for a Sammy, can I suggest one thing though? Get it from John Lewis, or somewhere that offers a proper 5 year guarantee (NOT Currys/PCW!!) 'cos Samsung's aftercare can be a bit wanting. JL's guarantee is in-house, they have a 5* rep & they want to keep it that way.

I have lots of sony love it the sound ,tv no its got to be SAMSUNG,even though I have lg lol.
I want the bigger one but wife will not let me have lol.
so yeh SAMSUNG .

Right decision made i am going to go for

55" F8500 Series 8 Smart 3D Full HD LED TV

As @trevortron mentioned, Samsung has a great picture but quite a few people on avforums in the TV repair trade report that LG and Samsung are worse for aftersales, generally parts are difficult to get hold of after a few years and on the lower end sets failure rates shoot up after 3 years. Now of course not saying that this is going to effect everyone but just something to be aware of. Personally I would say that its probably worth going to JL, their 5 year warranty is one of the best available and they price match. You can also look at Costco, no quibble 5 year warranty but its is only valid while you are a member.
