Hi Guys,

Just wondering if any of our members here have built a floating wall for their entertainment system. I'm going to be decorating my living very soon and would like to build a false wall for my tv and things. Just wanted some ideas what you used in making your floating wall, mdf, plasterboard etc etc.
Any pictures would be great.

I want something like this:

I haven't made one, but they are very straight forwards, essentially some evenly spaced joists secured to your main wall, a patress (sufficient thickness of mdf to mount onto) then plasterboard. If you need to you can place routes though for cabling at the rear (ensuring you have cut outs in your joists and the ability to pull cables through without snagging)

I know it's not a be all and end all answer and not knowing your complete AV setup, but I kind of find these things develop.

Try looking here for some ideas, I buy these for corporate installs:

You also don't have to use the cables but can create what looks like an open letterbox with the bristles to route your cables through, or these type of things:

Or I made this AV rack from some ally box section and had the acrylic shelves cut and the edges polished so the kids didn't slice themselves open on them!

This is stuck in my shed if anyone wants to make me an offer, minus the av gear ;)

Excellent post Oily looks brilliant mate, Looks pretty straight forward will defiantly give this ago myself. I'll try remember to take progress pictures as I go along and update this post once complete.

Exos thanks for the link mate some good stuff on that site.

looks very good but surprised you dont use protection on your units,no surge protection or cable/sat box protection. if you get a lightning strike or massive 260v overload you will have plenty of sparks as everything is connected by wires.
where did ya rob the snap on prayer mat :proud:shows you were protecting your knees.

There's a multi gang surge protection unit behind the TV as it was the only place it wasn't 'visible'!
I robbed the 'prayer mat' off the the Snap On dealer ;) I use to be on the spanners and hated working on my knees on cold concrete floors

and are your cable feeds protected also?

We floated out a chimney breast 110mm about a month back for a 68" tv.

Above the tv is going to be slim long centre speaker that will have a housing made to be the exact same width as the tv with speaker cloth over it.

After 5 months of planning and persuading the misses lol I have finally found time to renovate both my living room and kitchen:Drums: I've decided to build a false chimney out of timber studs and plasterboard which will have a space at the bottom to put av gear in. I will also be forming a bulkhead at one end of the living room for the projector screen ( misses dn't know this yet )here a couple progress pictures , it's only taken me 6 hours to scrape that one bit of wall fecking hardwork lol in this heat. I'll update this thread as the project progresses.

@tlogic I have a small problem with your design (sorry)!

Are you planning on having 2 x surround sound setups?

I mean you need to drop the projector screen in front of the TV, then you get the surround sound.

It is more important that you have the projector kitted with the surround sound rather than the TV, it would be better if you must have the Projector screen away from the TV to have a sound bar on the tele and then use the surround sound for the Projector?

Maybe I have it completely wrong mate, but from the drawing it looks like the projector screen is off to the right and the TV is in the center of the room.

Mick
