All,

Firstly thanks to everyone (Hawkish etc) who've gave me sound advice in last week or so

Finally narrowed down (kinda) to 42" Panasonic but no idea whether to go with Plasma or LED

TV I am replacing is a 5yr old HD Ready Sammy 42" Plasma so looking for something where I'll notice the improvement

Which delivers best picture and v importantly which is comfortable with gaming?

Thanks Again!

P.S

Been looking at these:

I have the Sony LED, had a Panasonic Plasma, I prefer the LED.

Sent from my iPhone using fingers and thumbs!

for me, plasma all the way, dout if ill go back to lcd any time soon.

good choice by the way with the panny.... but if you can afford it go 50 inch mate ;)

I have a 43" panny Plasma which has served me well for 5 years plus, and is still as crisp as the day it came out the box.

I also have a 55" LED Sammy, and I have to be honest in HD and against my panny the samsung blows it away. LCD is somewhere in between, but it really does entirely depend on the panel you buy. You can get a top end plasma and a low end LED but the plasma would come out on top.

Depends what YOU call best, led will be brighter, but plasma will be best for gaming (faster response time) so my advice would be plasma for your requirements.

LCD is somewhere in between

LED is LCD m8. TV's sold as LCD's are lit with cathode tube, LED tv's are LCD lit with LED. It's only now that LED lighting is starting to improve enough to better traditional cathode lit screens.

I won't buy a Plasma as they use too much power and I'm tight with the old leccy :)

exos,is that the 3d samsung 8 series?? i have the same set if it is,had it 9 months and its cracking bit off kit,but yesterday the thing started clicking and not turning on,duff cap on the psu i think, just to warn ya matey,2400 quid i paid and certainly didn't expect problems after 9 months usage

I wish..

It's the 6 series (6540), paid £1300 for mine (discounted by £300), but still a great picture none the less.

(also, just realised, i kept saying Panny in my earlier post, when i actually meant Pioneer - which cost me just over 2k but it was very early days of plasma)

Have a look at the TXP42ST30 from Panasonic. It is reasonably priced and a bit of a different beast from the s and g series as it uses last years VT neo plasma panel. It is 3D ready and has the perks of the newer "neo" specification

There is no definitive answer between LED/plasma. It is whatever floats your boat. I would say that sony make better LEDs than Panny though, have a look at the KDL40EX524 from sony for sidelit LED. Philips full backlit LED sets can be found for bargain prices at the moment, have a look for the 40pfl9604 - its got the eisa tv award for two years running so they must be doing something right.

Personally I prefer Plasma (but I own a 37" lcd!) Plasma contrast starts at perfect dark and goes up to sensible leves of light, sidelit LED starts a little further up the light range losing you detail is very dark scenes, IMO led is too bright unless you drop the backlight right down. too much light coming through will wash out fine details in the image. Backlit LED should provide the best of both worlds but you need to set it up properly to realise its potential.

:)
