Evening all,

A friend had given me a Macbook Pro to try and get working lol (i've never had hold of one before so it's all double jargon)

When i power up it has a flashing question mark on the screen.

I've done some googling and i've got into the OS X Utilities.

I've tried the restore from time machine backup, but there doesn't seem to be one in the backup list. lol

I've tried reinstall OS X, it gets to the stage where it says select the disk where you want to install OS X, but there are no disks showing??

I've gone to the Disk Utility, on the left it has Disk0 and underneath OS X Base System, i've tried verify disk and it says all ok.
Restore doesn't seem to let me enter anything in the Destination bar?

Any help would be very much apreciated. :)

Thanks for the link, but i think the hard drive is clapped out. I stuck another one in and i seem to be getting somewhere (all be it slowly lol

Update lol

After getting nowhere with the hard drive that i'd dug out of some old laptop. I concluded it needed a new one. so informed the lad.

He brings it up Wednesday, so i install it and go through the motions.

Gets to the point where it says "downloading additional components" counts down the minutes, and when it gets to zero, it either goes back up to 15 mins and repeats itself, or comes up with an error could not download bla bla.

So i go back out of the install screen, back to the utility and the drive had now vanished????

So i'm thinking there's something else wrong thats screwing the drive. (i had to put it into a Windows PC and use an old XP disk to find/ and format it to FAT32, before the Mac would see it again????/

Anyway lol, i phone the guy and explain best i can, what i've tried and the conclusion, and he says "do you think it could be blacklisted" lol
So i says "why, is it stolen" and he says "Yea, 2 years ago from some Amazon warehouse" lol

So i'm assuming they've blacklisted the serial/ Wifi/ LAN MAC's??

So, is there any other way do install the OS X without going via Apples servers?

Cheers

Dar :)

You'll be lucky - all Apple serials go thru the APNS so at some point, it will check in with Apple.

You'd need another Mac, download the installer for Siera from the Apple store, then get an 8GB usb and use DiskMaker X to make a bootable USB. Install from that
