I answered a thread about a problem with silverfish and suggested a way of getting rid of them by using Diatomacious Earth, what I didn't realise until having done a little research is that food grade Diatomacious Earth is very effective for treating pets for fleas and/or mites so handy for dogs, cats and birds !!
It can apparently be given orally to cats and dogs to stop worms so is looking like a cheap alternative to all of the chemically based options.
Diatomacious Earth, which is also called DE is the fossilised remains of countless millions of microscopically tiny unicellular plants, called diatoms, that live in every sea and lake. The intricately woven shells of the diatoms in the DE food grade powder act as a super sponge, soaking up huge amounts of water and oils and their associated smells. Parasites cannot cope with DE powder, it sucks the liquids and lipids from their skin causing them to dehydrate and die.
