Just looking for opinions, based perhaps on experience.
How log would you expect a reasonably decent phone to last these days?
The reason I was is my Samsung S5 mini has started playing up. It's only had about 1 year of use, and not heave usage, just normal half a dozen or so calls a day, taking the odd picture and occasional 'online' use while out & about. Always in a case & no hard drops.

After a year of relatively trouble-free use, the past few days it's been a pain in the wotsit. Freezing when someone calls- battery out job. Not the auto-rotate doesn't work and the automatic brightness feature has become intermittent.
TBH, it's never been my favourite phone, but I'm not one for replacing my phone for the sake of it. But with three quite separate things going wrong in as many days I am left wondering if it's par for the course these days. I will undoubtedly try a few resets etc. if it keeps playing up.

But for the best part of £300, I'd have expected it to last a bit longer than the warranty period. If it does end up going the journey, I will certainly miss the excellent bright display.

I would say about two years so the sales of goods act comes into play.

Thanks guys. It did it again yesterday. This time the screen sensor decided to have a rest, thus the screen remains sensitive during a call causing all sorts of mayhem. (Call muted, starts up music player etc. etc.)
As far as I know all the s/w is up to date. It is quick enough to nag when it isn't lol!
Re. the 2 years thing- as it happens all electrical goods sold here (and most of EU) come with a compulsory 2 year warranty. But I bought this online from the UK.
Battery 'life' doesn't seem to be an issue with it- I can usually get away with not charging it for one night if I forget and it's never pegged out completely on me. Do you still think a new battery would help @nistleboy?
I will restore factory settings when I have a quiet hour or two & see how it goes from there.

Depends on the usage. Every phone should work at least 1 year. But it will almost always have to be replaced with a new one after 2 years

I had a S3 mini that had the exact same problems,I took the sim card out and done a factory reset on the phone,it solved all the problems and it is still working fine to this day.

My first thought was the battery as well. S3 had various problems but seemed to charge ok, I opened the battery compartment and couldn't put it back on as the battery had expanded. Replaced it with a genuine battery( approx £27) and all problems disappeared.

Third party batteries usually suck, It's worth to pay the extra to buy genuine ones. ;)

Yes I agree.

A quick update: I did order another battery but, while I was awaiting its arrival I reset the phone to factory and only re-installed the app's I actually use regularly and (touch wood) it has been fine.
The biggest problem I was having was with the proximity sensor. When it stopped working (2 or 3 times/day) the screen remained active during a call causing all sorts of problems. Doing the *#0*# self-test re-booted the phone when running the sensor test, after which it would be OK for a few hours, so I suppose this did kind of point to a s/w issue.
So I still have a brand new (genuine) battery in its wrapping- ready for when things start playing up again.

Thanks to all for the help :)
