I have just bought a second hand Galaxy S3. Everything seemed alright with it until I put it on to charge. I get a beeping noise, then a message saying battery disconnected. It connects to my PC fine through Kies software, and I go view all the info as you should, also transfer data. But it will keep saying battery disconnected and not charge.
I have managed to push the charging cable in part way and it charges, but if I push it all the way in, it says battery disconnected.
Would I be right in thinking it needs the charging port replacing?
Thanks

You could try another cable mate, mine won't even acknowledge certain ones.
The charging port seems pretty flimsy too.

Maybe someone would lend you another battery to try.

Hope you get it sorted.

It seems easier to get it to charge using an original Samsung mains charger, but still not pushing it all the way in. I have tried another battery out of my wives S3 and still the same. I have googled the problem and there are people saying it needs a battery memory reset, which is done by turning the phone off, then plugging in the wall charger and after a few seconds put the battery back in.
I haven't managed to try doing the battery reset, as I have took the phone in for repair. Well there going to see if its the charger port, and if so replace it. I will find out tomorrow.

Well the repair shop still have the phone and are stuck as to what the problem is, but say there not going to let it beat them. The repair shop is one of the best in Nottingham and has all the equipment for repairs. I have just rang them again and I have said I will let them keep it until Monday, and if its not fixed, I'll be selling as faulty.
Very strange problem, connects via usb to pc and Kies software works fine, just get "battery disconnected" message and doesn't charge. I can get it to charge sometimes, using a genuine Samsung wall charger, if I only push in part way, otherwise get "battery disconnected" message.

can you try and update the firm or download a cfw firm.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2

I did download the latest firmware before it went into the shop, but still the same. I am ringing the shop later on to see if they've had any joy, and will collect later on. I will try a few things that have been mentioned on the forum and let you know.

Yeah! You could try another cable.that'll sort you out

I have tried a few different cables.
I have now got it back from the shop, they said they have no idea on how to fix the problem.
Since getting it back I have done a cache reset and master reset, I have managed to get it to charge from my pc usb but came up with "battery disconnected" at 64% charge and just kept bleeping every 10 seconds.
I have now managed to get it to charge on a genuine Samsung wall charger, but lead not pushed all the way in and its on 90%, so hopefully will get a full charge.
What I have noticed, is that when I plugged the pc usb lead in and it was charging, when it came up with "battery disconnected", I then disconnected lead and when plugged back in, the battery icon did have the charging lightning strike through it, but when the phone screen went black, this is when it would say "battery disconnected" again.

obviously something wrong especially as shop cant fix it. Where and when did you get it from? I'd consider sending it back if possible because it could get worse and you end up with a paper weight

My wife had bought it off Gumtree. She did all the usual checks and all looked good until she plugged a charger in. I think the seller knew of fault, but she has no address for seller, as it was one of them that give you an address that's impossible to find, so you ring them and they say I'll come to you.
Oh well I will be listing it on Ebay as faulty. Hopefully get a bit of money back. The repair shop didn't charge anything as they couldn't find the fault.

A few people have mentioned custom firmware may help. I am struggling to find this or even what to look for?

Can't imagine firmware fixing this mate, sounds more like a physical fault to me.
Assuming that you gave the repair shop the same information as you have given here I am very surprised they didn't replace the port. That would have been my first call as part of the elimination process.

It just seems strange that it will work to a certain extent so long as you don't insert the usb fully. The fact that Kies works tells me that the 2 data lines and the mode detect line is working. That only leaves the 5v and 0v lines.
It could be that there is a dry joint in the internal charge monitoring circuit which is being aggravated by having the usb fully inserted.

Wouldn't hurt to give these guys a call. I've never dealt with them but they repair a lot of phones and have probably come across the exact same symptoms before.

Thanks for the advice.
I don't think the shop wanted to swap the charging port just in case this wasn't the fault, due to it saying "battery disconnected". As far as I know they did check all connections on port, well I think they looked at everything they could think of, as they kept it for a week.
I have sent an email to Samsung support and await a response, which they say is within 48 hours.

I had a phone call from Samsung who put me on to there authorised repairer closest to me. I have took it to them, who said as long as its not damaged, they can do a warranty repair free. They gave me a call yesterday and it turns out there is moisture damage to the charging port, Samsung nor there authorised dealers will change the port, as its part of the motherboard. They have however told me there is a liquid which they drop the phone in, that can possibly clean the corroded connections, depending on how bad it is, they have an 80% success rate, for them to do it is costing me £20, so fingers crossed.

If the above doesnt work give SamFix a go, theyll give a quote.
Few mates used in the past

I have managed to get a depreciated refund from Samsung as the phone is still under 2 years old, so still under warranty, I actually get the payment of £192 into my bank this coming Friday.
The fault is on the main board and Samsung say its not cost effective to repair.

I registered just to say.

I followed these instructions elsewhere.

take out micro sd and sim and battery, connect charger, hold power for 15 seconds.

Turn on VOILA works,:Bounce:

Now prior to this I took battery out and held down power for around 1 minute.
Elsewhere people have said if you drop the phone it will work again, (obviously in a cover) Not sure why this would work but elsewhere about 50 people have testified that it does.
I wasn't game to drop it more than a foot, but the above worked fine.

Michael.
