WiFi Wifi range extender

depends on how much you want to spend. I gone off TP-Link at the moment, had one of their routers die on me recently and got a WAP which performs so and so.

Top of the domestic range I would say at the moment is Asus, which is a also a gigabit switch and NAS
Asus RT-N56U Reviews | Asus RT-N56U Black Diamond Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Fibre Broadband Router (600Mbps)

or something more affordable try the following,
NETGEAR WN2000RPT Universal Wireless-N Range Extender (300Mbps)

Desktop link gets about 60% signal while tablets get about 10%. I'd go for the best option that delivered. I could use the TPlink somewhere else I guess but your preferred option would be? Thanks.

any cheap router that will take dd-wrt and has an external antenna

I use a sly wifi booster to boost my BT signal in my shed and garden, you may know someone on sly,you could ask them to get you one for free(there were free when I got mine)

I've got a sky booster I've never used if you wanna just cover postage you can have it.

Dont these wifi extenders reduce the bandwidth by 50% as the signal is retransmitted and using the same channel.

Yesish lol. In a situation where your wifi source is in the same building as the device connecting you would be better off with homeplugs to channel the signal and going back to wifi at the other end. Or, if you're rich, deploy Cisco wifi in a roaming mesh.

However, the scenario I have is piggybacking off a neighbour's wifi at the daughter's house (by agreement) so the choice is between bandwidth/no bandwidth!

But it won't affect the host's bandwidth, right?

I've just realised I have the 730, it does everything I wanted it to & seldom need re-booting. Wasn't that dear either, which is unusual for tech stuff here.

Don't know if it will be any after but it is one of the quickest home routers at the moment. parental controls work fine, depends on what you are looking for. You can down the manual from Asus website and have a look at its functionality.

I would also look at OpenDNS which provides filtering.
