Wondering if anyone else has TalkTalk broadband and have their own server as I have just moved to them and have had no end of problems trying to get access to my server.

With my old router was able to connect to my home server with no problem

Since going with TalkTalk I am unable to access my server as when I enter url to my home server all I keep getting is the router login page

Been trying to explain and get a solution from TalkTalk for over 40 mins without any success.

Am now wishing I had not moved from my last ISP

Any help appreciated.

Go into the router settings and turn off "remote access" and/or change the port which the router lets you acces it. Some of the routers have their remote access page set to port 80, which is the default port for web servers.

if you need to access the router remotely set it to something like port 8080, which a normal port for remote access of the router.

Or you can still use your old router with your new account.

Sorry but cannot find 'remote access' anywhere

If it is the D-Link DSL-2740R then goto advanced tab and "remote management" is toward the bottom of the menu on the left.

You may also need to forward the incoming port to the IP of the PC running the server, port 80 for web server or port 21 (or whatever) for FTP.

Thats also done on the advanced tab, top of the menu on the left.

it also might be worth checking out firmware and possiblytrying to flash the stock dlink firmware to it as the talk talk firmwares are crap, they even give themselves a higher number than the stock ones trying to imply newer firmwares............................

as stated change remote login page port of router, or change your port for your server from 80 to 88 or 8080.

tried that and still same problem
Which router have they supplied you?
HG521

thanks for all your suggestions

Seems they told me a load of rubbish when i signed with them as was told would get a static ip but appears you don't on my package so have upgraded my package with them so as to get the static ip but this will take a couple of days to happen so will have to wait until then and see if works when I get my static ip which am hoping will solve the problem

Can you not just use a dynamic dns provider and save some cash

I have used dyndns.org for years all you do is sign up for free and create a account and choose your domain name, then you run a small program on your pc that updates your account with your ip address so that everytime it changes you can still use the domain name you choose. Some routers like the d-link one have a setting so they will update the IP automatically to your dyndns account.

Or 1and1 internet are giving 12 months free, then £3.99 per month thereafter (plus VAT) for you to host your own website or ftp which includes your own email service, and you get 1 free co.uk domain included in the price, it has 10gb of space, dunno if thats enough for you.

I use one for FTP and various websites so I can put the pictures in and files that I share on forums like this.

5 days left before the offer ends though.

I also have a dyndns service which updates through my netgear but this account for free sounds too good, I may have to sign up but what happens if after 12 months I dont want it, Is there some clause or something.

Basically can I cancel it after 12 months and thats that. I dont have to pay anything

Thanks

Edit : Seems there is windows and linux hosting for free people

When you go to sign up they say this. Payments are made bi-anuually (every 6 months).

I've been with them for years and had about 1 days downtime in total. It's always been fast and reliable. FTP and Email works at my full download speed.

Special Offer: £0.00 for the first 12 months, then £3.99 per month during the whole contract term.
24 month minimum contract term applies.

Thanks for the reply, I thought there would be something to it. But still I guess £47.88 for 2 years hosting is not bad at all.

Cheers mate, will have to think about this one.

already use no-ip but just doesn't work for some unknown reason (used to work with my old isp but not with talktalk and so put it down to where they use a dynamic instead of static ip)

Just to update ... seems that talktalk no longer give static ip's now so seems they tell you anything to get you to sign up/stay with them

if anyone is using talktalk and running a server from home using dynamic ip from them can they please tell me (in simple easy steps) how they got it working as have tried numerous ways without success

Sorry mate, I have vermin and dyndns with a netgear router. Was simple to set up - created an account at dyndns and entered that info into router and that was that.

Edit: Sorry but I am not sure if I actually have a static IP with them as mine has not changed for over 2 years, I have read somewhere that they are dynamic but as I mention mine has not changed and I have upplugged the modem on a few occasions.

My m8 has talktalk with the d-link router. He uses dyndns and used to use the updater from their web site. He's had no problems at all. Now I have put the dyndn detail into the router so he doesnt even have to use the updater anymore.

If you are getting the router admin page then it's most likely that you need to turn off remote access on the router. Is there a "mnagement" option in the menu, if there is, is there a remote option, if there is turn it off.

Change the port of your server, and then change the port forwarding in the router itself, forward it to your PC's IP address.

Here's a little bit of info I could find on asimilar router, about changing ports. - http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Huawei/EchoLife-HG520v/WebcamXP.htm

Unfortunately different router and so screenshots and instructions do not match with my router so unable to make sense of what have to do exactly.

TalkTalk support are crap as refuse to help (even though it is their supplied router) they claim they will not help with this kind of tech support.

So currently as it stands am using my old router which works but no matter what I try with their router (HG521) I cannot get it to work with a home server

I would complain a bit and say their router is having a problem. My m8 did and they sent him a d-link router which is dead simple to setup for home servers.

But at the end of the day if your old router is working why change it.

I understand that if my router works then use it instead of theirs

Just that if could have got theirs working it would have been nice as can then keep my router as a 'spare' in case of issues at a later date

Just annoying that because I want to run a server from home that they refuse to help.

Anyway, might cancel with them in couple of weeks (28 day trial), have to wait and see
