I have 2 pc's on the same router which are too far away to keep running upstairs and downstairs to each other to keep an eye on while they do things, so:

How do i set them up to be viewed on one desktop wirelessly?

Clive.

The PC your connecting too, does it have Windows XP Pro on?

If it does then on Start menu / Control Panel / System / Remote tab

Tick "allow users to connect remotely to this computer"

On the other machine, go to Start menu / Accesories / Remote Desktop Connection

Type in the IP address of the machine your connecting to and it should connect

I use tightVNC, set set the PC's as a server and use viewer to work on the other.

Ok I've allowed remote and got the ip of the one upstairs which is on xp pro
The one downstairs is on vista and is asking for username and password
I've tried inputting the passwords for logon for the pc upstairs and makng up my own and not inputting anything but its still not connecting.
I've even tried tightVNC and that also fails to connect.
any ideas?

Clive.

Ps because both pc's are on the same router and modem they share the same ip

The PC your connecting too, needs a local username and password associated with it. You cannot have a local user account and a blank password. Remote Desktop doesn't allow it.

As you have Vista and XP Pro this should work fine.

The PC's can't have the same IP, otherwise there would be an IP conflict.

Usually the router would be something like 192.168.0.1, PC 1 would be 192.168.0.2, PC 2 would be 192.168.0.3 and so on.

what version of vista do you have you normally have to enable "remote desktop" and my version of vista doesn't have it on.

the screen shot below is from my xp machine and if i showed you the one from vista it's actually missing the bottom bit. ( this is why i have to use tightVNC )

Purity is correct, machines can't have the same ip address they simply would not allow to be both on at the same time.

Also you have to make sure that you have them set up on the same network, for example, my network is called "netgear" it's given this from the router so under network name i have to have the computers attached to this network.

If you can give the computers static ip addresses as well this sometimes helps when you want to use tight vnc ( you can either give them ip addresses on the network connection or tell your router to give them the same ip address if they are ever connected to it)

Also, Purity is correct, they need user name and passwords to allow remote desktop to work.

i use a programme called teamviewer have a google and see what you think works a treat for me

Have to agree Teamviewer is what i use to support family friends when i connect to them and is very good

I've used d TightVNC and it's very good. Maybe you can't get it working because your ports in your router aren't forwarded? Just a thought. That's the only thing that's ever stopped it working for me.

i don't think you need to open ports on an internal network mate? correct me if I'm wrong but thats just when you connect from the outside world.

I finally got TightVNC to work after reading the setup instructions properly lol, only thing is when I'm watching what the server pc is doing it comes down very slowly like dial-up speeds and I'm on a linksys.
how come its so slow?
I do like TightVNC now I've got it going, the viewer downstairs has a lot of control over the server upstairs which is what i wanted but its just slow is all.
Any ideas?

give teamviewer a try m8, i used to have the same lag isssues with vnc but i have had no issues with teamviewer

l use this and its a great program .. might have a copy if u need it http://www.remote-desktop-control.com/

Remote Desktop Control is very easy to deploy. Just follow these few steps and you will get the system to work:

1. Go to the computer you want to control, it is a Host Computer. Install the Host Module (or both modules) of Remote Desktop Control product there. You may download the installation package right from our site onto that computer or ask somebody to do this task for you. Make sure that the Host Module is running on the remote PC.
2. Go to your own PC, it is Admin Computer. Download a setup package and install at least the Admin Module. The installation package is the same and contains admin and host modules together.
3. Start the Admin Module on your PC via the desktop shortcut or Start menu. Add the host computer IP address to the address book. In some cases you have to use Internet gateway.
4. Connect to the remote computer using the "Connect" button.
5. You may use "View Only" button to observe what is going on the remote PC.
6. Press the "Full Control" button and control the remote PC with your mouse and keyboard. Use "Remote Screen Window" which appears or switch to a full screen mode.

@ dibbers, Yes im on a linksys wireless on both pc's.
@smirnoff_rules, I'll try that after I give teamviewer a go because I'll need the files yeah? thanks mate ;)
@6bellys, thanks mate, I'll give that a go next :)

could be the old "wireless " problem kicking in then man, you know what it's like some times, how fast can you transfer files? maybe it's some thing that you'll have to live with being on wireless....
