what don't work on this box ?
whats unstable ?
what niggles you about it ?

please be honest lol it is a Linux box after all ;)

if I'm to part with that amount of money I wanna know what to expect, Ive read all the good bits so would like some truthful answers to whats not so good

:)

this post isnt meant as a pop of any kind, its a fair question :)

the media player part of the box is rather lacking, but this has some what been put right in the newest official 5.5 firmware.

looking through another forum m8, it looks like media player in some images needs updating, some network bugs, and random HDD vanishing, depending on what make it is. few random restarts then refusing to boot, some images worse than others

pretty much like every other linux box lol

depends on what image people find is best for how they want to use it. most people will find an image theyre happy with, and if theyre not a tinkerer, stick with it for ages, untill something in an update catches their eye, then theyll mess it all up trying to update it and wonder why they didnt leave it alone when it was working fine

like i just did with my DM800, lol

Media player not 100% on xvid format you can use vlc but I would love to see it fixed.

To describe the VU+ duo as prety much like any other linux based box is a little misleading, its like saying a Aston Martin db9 is prety much like any other car because it runs on petorol. Im not saying this is the best box as that is probably the DM8000 (lamborghini diablo) its just not a DM800 clone (Robin Reliant)

I hope you get my point as I have tryed just about all the E2 boxes and beleive me there is a world of differance between the best and the worst linux based box.

I'm quite new to the sat side of things but got a Duo a week or so ago, flashed with the latest VIX image and updated everything online and have had no problems with anything so far, 1TB hard drive installed and has recorded and played everything I've thrown at it so far

I did have problems trying to install a 2TB drive, kept crashing the box :(

even with the DM8000, theres bugs that crash it, little things that dont work, the odd random freeze or reboot, just like every other linux box ;)

i own what could be described as one of the best, as well as what some describe as one of the worst, E2 linux boxes, and over the next few months, im going to sell some of the stuff i dont use, and get another Vu+ Duo, but ALL linux receivers have bugs, wether you pay nearly a grand for a DM8000, or £40 for a DM500 clone, theres bugs

put sugar in the tanks of your DB9, diablo and reliant, and no matter what they look like, how expensive they are, or what other fancy features one has that another one dont, they all have the same bug, itll just show in different ways due to the different hardware ;)

also, the image will make a HUGE difference

Digi are some boxes better than others ? or were all linux receivers created to be equal LOL

not gonna hijack VU thread and god forbid i criticise another box...but I've hada dm800 clone nab.12 ...........never crashes/overheats or noisy fan and all the rest of the probs associated with clones.......

epg.no prob. internal hhd-no prob..media reader/streamer no prob....

had dm8000 original.........nice kit but not needed ....

alot of faults and moans about boxes, but who actually continuously uses or needs the features they moan about....

alot of the time its ppl. moaning coz they cant get it to work even when others have

@bod you have been one of the lucky ones mate lol. Saying that my mate has had a DM800 clone about a year and never had a problem and as digi has mentioned if you dont tinker they can be solid.

on the contrary......this has been the most abused box I have ever had

some boxes are 101% built to a better quality than others, compare any clone to an original. quality between originals of different makes also varies quite a lot, and theres a MASSIVE difference in the quality of the images, and this is the downfall of most linux receivers

no receiver will ever be perfect, especially a linux based one. the source has been ported from one place to another, upgraded, downgraded, updated, drivers added, drivers removed, plugins added, plugins removed, programmes added, executables added, then removed, and most times, stray bits of code left behind, or instead of things being stripped back and re-written, they have had work arounds put in place

the code for just about every linux based receiver, is a mess, but it works

it also depends what you want from a receiver, just plug it in and watch telly, sorted, take your pick from any of them, flash it once, and untill the channels change transponder, youre done, its when things start to be added that bugs start to become more apparent, plugins, media, streaming, recording, web interfaces, servers, hosting, connecting dvd drives, etc etc

Have you ever considered working in politics digi lol :flock: :flock:

so it doesn't play avi files from usb very good ? is that what your saying ?

it plays some ok mainly xvids that have problems for me.

I have some MKV's that cant play the audio stream (picture no sound), appears to be with files that have DTS Audio as the default audio stream.. I have tried through SPDIF through an amp same issue.

also MKV's dont rewind and forward well.

everything else is excellent, no other bugs.

Good points, never had an issue streaming to PC click on the webinterface and plays the stream.. (never fails). this used to be quite buggy on my Dreambox 500 enigma1

once you get it up and running i would recommend you back up and keep on flash pen.
i have to keep reflashing(weekly) as box looses tuner configuration and channels .
saves a lot of time have backup.
still very happy with box though

this with all boxes ? a known issue ?
